Kremlin announces Russian Forces Capture Pokrovsk in Ukraine
Moscow – The Russian military has informed President Vladimir Putin of its forces’ capture of Pokrovsk, a strategically significant city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, the Kremlin announced today. the advance marks a significant territorial gain for Russia amid intensified fighting in eastern Ukraine.
The capture of Pokrovsk, a key railway hub and former frontline city, comes as Russian forces have been steadily advancing on multiple fronts in recent weeks, particularly in the Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, and Zaporozhye regions. This latest development underscores the escalating conflict as Ukraine enters its fourth year of resisting the full-scale Russian invasion, which began in February 2022, following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and occupation of roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
According to analysis by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces recorded their largest military advance in Ukraine in the past year last month, conquering 701 square kilometers of territory. This recent gain in Pokrovsk follows that momentum, representing the second moast significant advance by the Russian army as the initial months of the war in spring 2022.The ongoing offensive raises concerns about Ukraine’s ability to hold its defensive lines and perhaps shifts the battlefield dynamics in favor of Russia.
