Brock Lesnar made an unexpected return to WWE at SummerSlam in Detroit, Michigan on August 5, 2023, interrupting Cody rhodes’ celebration. This return has drawn scrutiny given the ongoing civil lawsuit against WWE and its former Chairman, Vince McMahon, alleging sex trafficking and sexual assault.
As previously reported by Catch-Newz, Lesnar’s reappearance does not currently impact the legal proceedings involving Janel Grant, a former WWE employee who filed the lawsuit in July 2023.The suit details allegations of abuse and coercion during her employment from 2019 to 2022. While Lesnar was named in a February 2024 amended complaint, he is not directly accused of wrongdoing.
Less than 24 hours after Lesnar’s return, a spokesperson for Janel Grant released a statement addressing the situation:
” For far too long, abuses have been allowed to persist under the direction of WWE. Instead of addressing these harms, WWE has shielded those responsible from accountability. This attempt to normalize unacceptable behavior will backfire.
We anticipate all facts, including those pertaining to Mr. Lesnar, will be presented before a court of law. We direct you to the updated complaint of Janel grant, which comprehensively details the abuses she endured from McMahon and others during her tenure with WWE.”
The civil case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks damages for emotional distress, lost earnings, and medical expenses. Grant alleges a pattern of sexual abuse and exploitation facilitated by McMahon and other WWE personnel. The lawsuit claims McMahon pressured Grant into a sexual relationship and that Lesnar was present during some of the alleged incidents, though not as a perpetrator. The case is being overseen by Judge Loretta A. Preska.
