Internet Cables Cutโค in Red Sea, โขDisrupting Data Traffic
International data traffic is experiencing disruptions due to damage to undersea cables inโฃ the Red Sea, beginning Saturday morning. Microsoft Azure โreported noticeable delays, particularly โฃaffecting data traffic between โAsia and Europe routedโ throughโฃ the โขMiddle East.
According toโ Microsoft,”Several international submarine cables in the Red Seaโข were cut.” NetBlocks confirmed the interruptions โin โขglobal data traffic, pinpointing severed cables โคnear Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Pakistan’s PTCL also โalerted customers to โpotential internet connection issues.
Microsoft Azure is workingโ to reroute dataโ traffic viaโข choice paths.โ The cause of the cable cuts โฃremains unclear, with potential โcausesโ ranging from sabotage by โขHouthi terrorists active in the region to accidental damage, suchโ as from a ship’s โคanchor.
Repairing these โฃcables โisโข a complex process expected to take a significant amount of time. Microsoft intends to โminimize the โimpact โthrough monitoring, redistribution, and optimization โof routing, and will provideโฃ updates โas theโ situation evolves.
The affectedโค cable โคsystems are SMW4 (Sea-Me-We 4), a 18,800-kilometer fiber optic cable connecting South East Asia,โ the Middle East, and Western Europe – operational โas 2005 andโข built โฃby a โขconsortium of 16 โขtelecommunicationsโข companiesโค – and IMEWE (India-Middle East-Western Europe), aโ 12,091-kilometer system consisting of threeโ fiber optic cables โconnecting Europe to โthe Middle โEast and India.
