Washington, D.C. – โคOregon Senator ron โคWyden sharplyโ criticized Robert F. Kennedyโข Jr.’s โleadership at the department of Health and Human services (HHS) during โa Senateโค hearing thursday, accusing him โฃof prioritizing โan “anti-vaccine mission” over public health and contributing too an exodus โof staff at the Centers for Diseaseโ Control and Prevention (CDC).
HHSโ Directorโข Kennedy defendedโ recent “shakeups”โฃ at the CDC,asserting the need for “bold, competent, creative new leadership” and the removal of officials with “conflicts of interest, catastrophicallyโ bad judgementโข and political agendas,” following โคwhat he characterized as agency failures during the pandemic.
Wyden countered that โฃthe departures are a direct โขresultโข of Kennedy’s “unceasing crusade โagainst vaccines,” stating, “instead of finding ways toโ help American families pay โless for health โcare, robert โKennedy is singularly โfocused on hisโค anti-vaccine mission,โ fueledโ by aโ messiah complex, the consequences be damned.”
The hearing unfolded amid ongoing controversy surrounding Kennedy’s โฃtenure and the future of vaccine policy. Former CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, inโ an op-ed published prior to the hearing, alleged Kennedy requested she pre-approve recommendations from the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel,โค whose members he reportedly โselected.Walensky stated thatโ some panel โmembers โขhaveโ been critical of vaccines and have spread misinformation.
Kennedy disputed โคWalensky’s account, claiming he only asked her if she was a “trustworthy person,” to whichโ he alleges she responded, “no.”
Kennedy has repeatedlyโ denied being “anti-vaccine,” despite a documentedโ history of vaccine criticismโ and the dissemination ofโ inaccurateโ data regarding vaccine efficacy. More than 1,000 current and former HHS staffers recently sent a letter urging President Donaldโข Trump to fire โฃKennedy, citing his spread of “inaccurate health information.”
The hearing also occurred as questions โฃarise regarding the availability of updated COVID-19โข vaccines. The โFood โand Drug governance approved the โlatest vaccine version โคon August 27, โbut with limited availability initially restricted to individualsโ over 65 andโข those at high risk. โฃThe CDC’sโข vaccineโ panel is scheduled โto meet this month toโ issue broader recommendations.
