Carlo Verdone‘s Mayoral Plans: A focus on Rome’s Outskirts
Carlo Verdone is preparing to take on a unique role: honorary mayor of Rome on November 17th, a tradition previously held by Alberto Sordi. However, Verdone intends to use this symbolic position to highlight issues beyond the city center, specifically focusing on the needs of Rome’s suburbs.
Acknowledging the current administration’s work in the central areas – noting that Mayor gualtieri “is doing well” despite some dimly lit streets (an issue Verdone personally experienced while trying to reach a dinner with Sergio Rubini) – Verdone plans to dedicate his “mayoral” efforts to the periphery. He believes significant work is needed in these areas, especially regarding improvements to public transportation and addressing issues of degradation.
verdone’s goal is to inspire civic pride within these neighborhoods, stating a need to “set a good example to make citizens love their neighborhood again.” He also expressed concern over the aesthetic quality of new constructions in Rome, contrasting it with the high standards of taste found elsewhere in Europe, lamenting a decline as the 1960s. He emphasized Italy‘s historical reputation for “great taste” and a need to restore that standard.
This focus on the outskirts aligns with themes explored in the fourth season of his Paramount+ series, “Vita da Carlo 4,” where his character takes on a role at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, aiming to support and provide opportunities for young talent. The series, directed with Icola Guaglianone and Menotti and Valerio Vestoso, follows Verdone’s character in self-imposed exile after a public incident, and his subsequent attempt to reinvent himself.
