Holbox Boosts Logistics with Jungheinrich Mobile Robots & Enhanced Safety Features

Dutch display specialist Holbox has implemented a new automated logistics solution at its recently opened facility in Roermond, Netherlands, utilizing mobile robots from German intralogistics expert Jungheinrich. The move, completed in early February 2026, aims to modernize internal logistics processes and improve sustainability, according to company officials.

Holbox relocated from Echt, Netherlands, in Spring 2025, taking the opportunity to redesign its production and logistics operations within the new, purpose-built facility. The company sought a solution to address repetitive and physically demanding material handling tasks, according to Martijn Hol, Managing Director of Holbox.

The core of the new system consists of two Jungheinrich EKS 215a mobile robots, supplemented by additional Jungheinrich lift trucks equipped with lithium-ion batteries. These robots are responsible for material flow between goods receipt, warehousing, production, and dispatch. The robots handle heavy and repetitive transport tasks, relieving strain on forklift drivers and allowing them to focus on more complex duties.

The EKS 215a robots are operated via a web-based user interface accessible on tablets, designed for intuitive use by all employees. Navigation relies on precise laser scanners and intelligent sensor technology, enabling safe operation in mixed traffic environments alongside personnel and conventional vehicles. Standard person protection sensors scan the travel path, adjusting speed based on proximity to obstacles and bringing the robots to a controlled stop when necessary.

Jungheinrich has incorporated specialized safety sensors tailored to Holbox’s specific requirements, a first for the company in the Netherlands. These sensors supplement the standard safety features of the mobile robots, detecting obstacles above the typical 20-centimeter detection height, including raised loads. The system automatically reduces speed or stops the vehicle in such instances.

The robots are also equipped with a custom-designed multi-fork attachment, capable of handling not only Euro and industrial pallets but also oversized paper pallets measuring 1.600 x 1.200 millimeters. This flexibility is intended to accommodate the diverse material handling needs of Holbox’s display production.

“Initially, the forklift drivers were somewhat skeptical, but from day one, the vehicles proved to be real team players,” said Hol. “They support our employees and take our logistics processes to the next level. With them, we are ready for the future.”
