US Tariffs on India Linkedโข to Trump’s Nobel Aspirations,โ Claimsโข Congressman
Washingtonโค D.C. – Aโฃ US Congressman is alleging that former President donald Trump’s recent doubling of tariffsโข on Indian goodsโ stems โฃfrom Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s โขrefusal to nominate him for โคa Nobel Peaceโฃ Prize. Roโ Khanna, representing California’s 17th congressionalโข district, publicly stated โthat Trump’s actions are damaging the strategic US-India relationship and โbenefiting china and Russia.
“It’s hurting โคAmerican manufacturers andโข ourโค exports into โขIndia. It isโฃ alsoโ driving India towards China and towards Russia,” Khanna said,โข criticizing the impact of the increasedโค tariffs.Khanna โclaims Trump felt slighted after Modi declined to support a Nobel nomination, despite Pakistan having done so. According to Khanna, Trump sought Modi’sโ endorsement during a June 17th phone call,โข referencing hisโ perceived role โin de-escalating tensions between India and โPakistan in may. The New โYork times reportedโ that Modi informed Trumpโ the ceasefire โขwas achieved โขthrough direct dialog โbetween India and Pakistan, โขwith noโ US involvement.
“Now, why is this happening? Forโ very simple reasons. Prime Minister Modi refused โto nominate Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace PrizeโฆIndia has said that theโฃ border dispute with Pakistanโฃ is anโ internalโค matter, refusingโฃ to give Donald Trump credit,” Khanna explained. He further urged Indian-Americans who supported Trump to reconsider, stating, โข”We can’t allow the ego of Donaldโฃ Trump to destroy โa strategic relationshipโ with India that isโฃ key to ensuring that America leads and not China.”
The escalatingโ tariffโค tensions have broughtโ the US-Indiaโ relationshipโค to a โคlow โขpoint. While Indian officials โconfirm ongoing discussions regarding trade โขmatters and remain open to a bilateral trade deal, thay are facing criticism from Trump allies who accuse โIndia of โ”profiteering” from its โpurchases of Russian oil.
A report by Jefferies, an American investment bank, supports the claim โthat Trump’s tariff decision is โคrooted in “personal pique” over not being recognized as a mediator in the India-Pakistan conflict. The report highlights that India consistently rejectsโ third-party intervention in its relationship with Pakistan, even at an economic cost.
Theโ new York โTimes also reported on Trump’s pursuit ofโ a Nobel โขPeace Prize nomination and hisโ claim of โฃcredit โfor the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
