CVS Pharmacy Reports 9 Million โฃNew โคCustomers Following Riteโฃ Aid โคClosures
woonsocket, RI – CVS Pharmacyโ announcedโ it has gained approximately 9 million former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs โขcustomers following the closure of stores โoperated by those brands, according to a company release. The gains come as Riteโฃ Aid navigates a challenging period, filing for Chapter 11 โฃbankruptcyโข protectionโ in May and selling โoff assetsโข to competitors.
CVS Health acquired prescriptionโค files from Rite Aid andโ Bartell Drugs as part of a broader restructuring of the โpharmacy landscape. To facilitate a smooth transition for customers, CVS Pharmacy distributed the acquired prescription files to stores within three miles of โคformer Rite โฃAid โlocations and hired over 3,500 employees โคpreviouslyโ working at Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs. Investments were alsoโ made in existing CVS Pharmacy locations toโค bolster staffing and training.
Rite Aid’s bankruptcy filing followed aโค previous restructuring effort thatโข saw the closure of โaround 850 stores.โ In may, the company โฃinitiated aโ process to sell substantially all of its assets, leading to agreements toโ transfer prescription files from over 1,000 โlocations to rivals โฃincluding CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons, Hooks, and Giant Eagle.
The influx of new customers contributed โto a significant increase in CVS Pharmacy’s performance during the secondโข quarter of 2025. Same-store pharmacy sales jumpedโ roughly 18%, while prescription volumes climbed 6% and retail script share reached 27.8%. โคCVSโ attributed a portion of this growth to “spill-over traffic” from the closingโข Rite Aid stores.
“From our innovative pharmacy care programs to our exclusive store brand products,we look forward โto showing Rite aid and Bartell Drugs โฃpatients โand customers all โขthat CVS has to offer,” CVS Health said in theโ release.
