Massachusetts Considers Redesign of Historic Flag amid Concerns Over Imagery
BOSTON โฃ- Massachusetts residents will haveโข teh chance to weigh in โฃon potential redesigns of the state flag โthis โฃfall,as aโ commission seeks to address concerns that the current โขflag andโ sealโค are “problematic” and do not adequately represent the state’s diverse โคpopulation. Public hearings areโ scheduled for September and October โฃ2025 to gather feedback on three finalist designs, following months โคof deliberation andโข proposalsโ submitted by the โpublic.โ
The debate over theโ flag’s future stems from criticisms of its imagery, particularly theโ depiction of a Native American figure wielding a sword above a dismembered arm-a symbol some find offensive and historically inaccurate. The currentโ flag, adopted in 1898, hasโ facedโ increasing scrutiny โin recentโ years as part of a broader national conversation about historical โขrepresentationsโข andโค inclusivity. The Commissionโ will โฃrefine the designs based โon public input, with Eastern Research Group assisting, before issuing final recommendations for adoption.
Three proposed designs are under consideration. Theโ first, “Mountains and Stars,” features aโ blue field with depictions of the state’s Berkshireโ and Taconic mountain ranges, alongside four stars representing Massachusetts asโ the fourth โฃstate to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The second, “Mayflower Flower,” showcases a stylized depiction โคof the trailing arbutus, the state flower, againstโ a navy blue background. The third, “Crimson Feathers,”โข presents a crimson background โคadorned with six turkey feathers, intended to โsymbolize the state’s history andโ its Indigenous communities.
Though, not all residents support aโ redesign. Opponents argue that the existing flag is a historical symbol that โshould be preserved, citing concerns about the cost of a change and the โpotential for a new design to inadvertently erase Indigenous representation.”Theโฃ primary argument is that the flag and seal,โ adopted in 1898, are historical symbols and should notโค be changedโข or erased,” according to reporting from Rine News Today.
Residents are encouraged toโฃ share their preferences and reasoning byโฃ selecting from the following options: #1 โขMountains and Stars, โ#2โฃ mayflower Flower, #3 Crimson โฃFeathers, or #4 โKeep historic flag.
