Sustainable Travel: Greece, Spain, Germany & Cameroon Face Tourism Crossroads

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 27, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Athens and Barcelona are bracing for another summer of record tourism, prompting renewed debate over the sustainability of mass travel and its impact on local communities. The United Nations World Tourism Organization reported near pre-pandemic international arrival levels in 2024, intensifying existing pressures on infrastructure and residents in popular destinations.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for countries like Spain, Greece, and Germany, supporting millions of jobs and contributing substantially to GDP. However, the resurgence of visitors has reignited concerns about overcrowding, rising housing costs, and strains on essential services in hotspots like Athens, and Barcelona. Cruise ship arrivals and the proliferation of short-term rentals continue to fuel the debate over acceptable tourism levels.

While overtourism dominates headlines, a parallel issue exists: undertourism. Secondary cities and rural regions, such as Leipzig in eastern Germany and inland areas of Catalonia, are actively seeking increased visitor numbers to stimulate their economies. This imbalance underscores that the core problem isn’t travel itself, but its concentration in specific locations and during peak seasons.

One practical approach to mitigating overtourism involves strategic timing. Visiting Athens in the spring or autumn, rather than the height of summer, can reduce congestion at sites like the Acropolis and offer a more pleasant experience with milder weather. Similarly, choosing destinations like Philadelphia over New York City, or Leipzig over central Berlin, can distribute tourism benefits more equitably.

Sustainable travel extends beyond minimizing harm; it as well aims to maximize positive impact. In rural Catalonia, local communities are leveraging tourism to preserve traditions, support farms, and sustain family-run guesthouses. In Cameroon, tourism can provide alternative income streams in regions with limited employment opportunities. This emphasis on community-based tourism encourages respectful engagement, the hiring of local guides, and the purchase of regionally made products.

However, responsible behavior remains paramount. Instances of intrusive photography or culturally insensitive conduct can undermine the communities tourism intends to support. Respect for privacy, local customs, and dignity are fundamental to sustainable tourism practices.

Modern travelers often face complex ethical dilemmas. Questions arise regarding giving money to beggars and the potential for reinforcing harmful cycles, or how to approach destinations with controversial political systems. Travel boycotts can disproportionately affect workers—hotel staff, restaurant employees, and street vendors—rather than policymakers. Tourism can also offer residents in isolated regions valuable cultural exchange and connection to the outside world.

Aviation presents a particularly challenging aspect of sustainable travel. The industry accounts for roughly 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions, with a higher climate impact when accounting for non-CO₂ effects at altitude, according to industry data. While sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and next-generation aircraft are in development, widespread decarbonization remains years away.

Travelers can reduce their aviation impact by choosing direct flights, flying on newer, fuel-efficient aircraft, combining multiple experiences into one extended trip, and utilizing rail or bus options for shorter distances. Offsetting unavoidable emissions through credible climate programs, such as those evaluated by Atmosfair, can partially mitigate the impact, though We see not a perfect solution.

A growing movement advocates for fewer trips but longer stays. This approach reduces the frequency of flights while fostering deeper cultural immersion. Extended stays encourage travelers to explore neighborhoods, local markets, and regional experiences, supporting local economies through the use of public transport, dining at neighborhood restaurants, and participating in community-based tours.

Greece and Spain both benefit economically from tourism revenue, which supports infrastructure, employment, and heritage preservation. Cultural exchange fosters global awareness and mutual respect. The challenge lies in evolving the industry towards a more balanced and sustainable model.

The future of tourism hinges on a shift from passive consumption to conscious participation, requiring informed choices, ethical sensitivity, and a willingness to adapt travel habits. As of February 27, 2026, no joint statement has been issued by Greece and Spain regarding coordinated tourism management strategies, despite reported “frictions” stemming from Spain’s military collaboration with Turkey, a point of contention for Greece.
