The study, published in Energy Research & Letters, reveals that building attributes are a crucial, and often overlooked, factor in predicting energy demand, notably as extreme weather events become more frequent.
Understanding this relationship is critical as cities and regions grapple with decarbonization efforts and the increasing strain on energy infrastructure. Variations in building stock explain considerable differences in natural gas usage even within the same climate zone, impacting the effectiveness of energy efficiency programs and the accuracy of grid load forecasting. Failure to account for thes building-specific factors coudl lead to inaccurate demand predictions, perhaps resulting in energy shortages or wasted resources.
Researchers analyzed natural gas consumption data alongside detailed building characteristics for a large metropolitan area. They found that older homes, unsurprisingly, exhibited higher gas usage across all temperature ranges compared to newer, more energy-efficient structures. However, the magnitude of this difference varied considerably with temperature; the gap widened significantly during colder periods.
The study highlighted that building size also plays a key role, with larger homes consuming more gas regardless of temperature. Insulation levels were another critical determinant, with poorly insulated homes showing a steeper increase in gas demand as temperatures dropped.
