Italy: Hiker Rescued After Falling Into Lava Cave on Mount Etna
A young woman โwas seriously injured โafter falling four meters โinto a lava cave on Mount โEtna โinโ Italy on sunday, around 11:30 a.m., according to the Sicilian โmountain rescue service.โฃ Her dog โคalso โfell into the โฃcavity, known as โthe “hiking Shepherd’s Denus.”
Speciallyโข trained cave and mountain rescuers extracted the hiker and her dog after approximatelyโฃ two hours. The woman was airlifted to a hospital with serious โinjuries, while the dog wasโ unharmed.
The incident occurred south of โฃEtna’s peak. Lava caves โฃaround Etna are popular tourist destinations,โค but “entering caves is always associated with a high potential for danger and should only be carried out with the appropriate equipment and in theโ presence of qualified personnel,” warns tour operatorโฃ Etna Natura.
Mount Etna, โขover 3,300 meters high, frequently erupts and is under constant monitoring. โโค An eruption occurred at the endโ of August, prompting the highest warning level for air traffic.
