Asheville Attorney Anna Stearns Enters Race for Buncombe County Commission
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – asheville attorney Anna Stearns announced her candidacy for the Buncombe County Commission, District 1, on Wednesday, sept. 11, setting the stage for a competitive election in the fall of 2024. Stearns will challenge incumbent Democrats Jennifer Horton and Al Whitesides for the seat.Stearns’ platform centers on expanding affordable housing options, bolstering mental health and addiction services, strengthening public schools, and improving infrastructure throughout Buncombe County. She aims to represent residents of eastern Buncombe County and advocate for those whose voices are often underrepresented.
“I’ve spent my career speaking up for folks whose voices don’t always get heard,” Stearns said in a statement. “I know what it feels like to face obstacles that feel insurmountable, and I know how valuable it is to have someone standing in your corner. I want to be that voice for the people of Buncombe County.”
District 1 is currently represented by Jennifer Horton, elected in 2024, and Al Whitesides, who won his second full four-year term in 2022. However, following redistricting in 2023, Whitesides no longer resides within District 1.Stearns’ proclamation follows closely after Buncombe County commissioner Martin Moore, representing District 2, launched his bid for Buncombe County District Attorney, a position currently held by Todd williams. Moore, elected to the County Commission in 2022 and currently serving as vice-chair, previously ran for a seat on the state’s Court of Appeals in 2024, losing to Republican Christopher Freeman.
