nThe Inner โคcity Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA), theโ largestโค predominantly Black orchestra in the โUnited States, is set โขto celebrate โขBlack History Month with aโ series of performances in โฃFebruary. Founded in 2009 by Charles Dickerson, the orchestra has โgrown from a six-week summer project into a transformative force in the lives of โฃyoung musicians. On February 9, ICYOLA will take the stage at the Wilshire ebell Theater, marking a milestone in its 16-year journey.
Dickerson, who serves as โคtheโฃ executive director and โฃconductor, reflectsโข on theโค orchestraโs humble beginnings. โWhen thisโข ensemble began in 2009,โ he shared, โI thought it was a summer projectโ that would last six weeks.โ Today, ICYOLA stands as a testament โto โthe power of music education and โฃcommunity impact. The orchestraโs mission โextends beyond cultivating musical talent; it aims to instill principles andโ habits that enrich every aspect of itsโ membersโ lives. โขโThese young people, theyโre the greatest young โpeople in the world,โ Dickerson emphasized. โWe do not do what โคwe do โwith this orchestra โฃwith โthe expectation that young people will โคnecessarilyโค become professional musicians โฆ We want the principles and practices and habits that we develop to transfer to allโ aspects of their lives.โ
The Black History Month โฃconcert will feature โขaโ powerful program that honors โฃtheโฃ African American experience. highlights include Margaret Bondsโs Montgomeryโ Variations, inspired byโ pivotal moments in the civil rights movement, and Florence Priceโs arrangementโ of the spiritual โSwing Low, Sweet Chariot.โ The orchestra will also performโ โLift โขevery Voice and Sing,โ often referred to as the โBlack โnationalโ anthem.โ Adding a personal touch, ICYOLA will showcase works by its own members, including โKenichi Fortuneโs Festival Overture and Trial and Triumph, a collaborative piece by Kenichi and Kevon Fortune.
ICYOLAโs impact extends far beyondโ theโ stage. As aโฃ memberโ of the league โฃof American Orchestras, Dickerson isโฃ committed toโ fostering excellence and inclusivity in classical music. The orchestraโs performances areโ not just concerts; they are celebrations of resilience, โฃcreativity, and cultural heritage.
