A yellow Rolls-Royce Phantom II served as the central, recurring element in a 1964 anthology film, bringing together an international cast and a series of interconnected stories. Directed by Anthony Asquith, The Yellow Rolls-Royce featured segments exploring the lives of three distinct owners of the vehicle.

Ingrid Bergman starred as Gerda Millett, a character involved in the film’s first narrative thread, which centered on a British diplomat and his French wife. Rex Harrison played the Marquess of Frinton in the same segment. The film then shifted to Italy, where Shirley MacLaine portrayed Mae Jenkins, a woman entangled in an affair connected to a mobster. George C. Scott played Paolo Maltese in this portion of the film. The final story followed an American woman, played by Jeanne Moreau as the Marchioness of Frinton, as she drove a Yugoslavian partisan. Alain Delon appeared as Stefano in this segment.

Beyond these leading roles, the film included a substantial supporting cast. Omar Sharif portrayed Davich, while Art Carney played Joey Friedlander. Joyce Grenfell was cast as Hortense Astor, and Edmund Purdom as Fane. Michael Hordern played Harnsworth, and Lance Percival was credited as an assistant car salesman. Additional actors included Roland Culver as Norwood, Moira Lister as Lady St. Simeon, and Harold Scott as Taylor.

The Yellow Rolls-Royce, originally titled The Yellow Rolls-Royce, was written by Terence Rattigan. The film, a co-production of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), blended comedy, drama, and romance. It received a nomination for two BAFTA awards and won one Golden Globe award for Best Original Song in 1965. The film’s structure, presenting three separate stories linked by a single object, offered a unique cinematic approach to exploring themes of love, betrayal, and societal contrasts.

The film’s production took place against the backdrop of the 1960s, with a reported runtime of 122 minutes. While set in the 1920s, the film’s release coincided with a period of significant cultural change and evolving cinematic styles. The cast represented a diverse range of nationalities and established acting talent, contributing to the film’s international appeal.
