Mercedes Diesel: 43 Years of Evolution Revealed

Classic W123 Takes on the Modern E220D in a Landmark Comparison

A fascinating study by German company Carwow pits a 1982 Mercedes 240 TD (W123) against the 2025 E220D 4Matic, revealing dramatic shifts in performance, efficiency, and luxury over 43 years.

Power and Performance Leaps

The vintage 240 TD, a symbol of its era, offered a modest 72 horsepower and 137 Nm of torque. In stark contrast, the contemporary E220D boasts a potent 197 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque, significantly boosted by a mild-hybrid system. Both vehicles feature four-cylinder diesel engines, highlighting the engineering advancements in power delivery.

Value Through the Decades

Adjusted for inflation, the 1982 Mercedes W123 would cost approximately €39,236 today. This figure is notably less than the €65,382 price tag of the brand-new E220D, illustrating a considerable increase in automotive pricing when accounting for economic changes.

Driving Dynamics: Then and Now

While the test pilot appreciated the classic Mercedes’ four-speed manual gearbox, a fifth gear was noted as desirable for highway cruising. The older model’s sound insulation lagged behind modern standards, though its overall comfort was described as “fantastic.”

Modern Comfort and Highway Prowess

The new Mercedes E220D excels on the highway, offering exceptional cabin silence and a superior level of comfort. However, the automatic transmission’s performance was critiqued, with the driver finding it less than optimal in its responses.

Fuel Efficiency Gains

Real-world testing demonstrated a significant improvement in fuel economy. The modern E220D averaged an impressive 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers, a marked improvement over the older model’s consumption of 7.9 liters per 100 km. This efficiency gain aligns with broader industry trends towards more economical powertrains, with the average fuel efficiency for new cars sold in the EU in 2023 being approximately 4.5 L/100 km according to the European Environment Agency.

PP-DB Corruption: CONPI Manipulation and CCP Closure Attempt

by Emma Walker – News Editor July 27, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

A collision of political ambition and perceived incompetence has led to national crises, according to ITN Member of Parliament Stanislav Balabanov. speaking on BNT’s “The Day Starts with Georgi Lyubenov,” Balabanov asserted that the “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” (PP-DB) coalition,in conjunction with the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP),has orchestrated thes detrimental outcomes.

Balabanov highlighted a pattern of political maneuvering, stating that GERB, BSP, and ITN have consistently sought broad parliamentary support for legislative initiatives. He noted that a meaningful number of political parties have expressed a desire to collaborate on legislation deemed crucial for the nation’s progress.

He recalled instances where PP-DB’s proposals, particularly during a period of joint governance, were driven by a desire for centralized control. Balabanov specifically cited Kiril Petkov‘s alleged attempt to place Boyko Rashkov at the head of the Commission for Combating Corruption and for the Confiscation of Unlawfully Acquired Property (CONPI). Balabanov stated he was present during these discussions, which ultimately led to the rejection of the proposal due to concerns that CONPI would be weaponized.

Further elaborating on the division of CONPI during a parliamentary session, Balabanov explained that PP-DB granted CONPI investigative powers, intending to maintain leverage when in power. He claimed that internal records indicate PP-DB leaders aimed to exert influence over state institutions through their aspirations for CONPI.

Balabanov also pointed out that PP-DB themselves incorporated CONPI into the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

“ITN will make every effort this week to prevent the closure of CONPI, as 5 billion [levs] are at stake,” Balabanov added.

This statement follows an declaration by GERB leader Boyko Borissov on Saturday from Burgas. Borissov declared the formation of a new parliamentary majority comprising PP-DB, “Vazrazhdane,” “Velichie,” ITN, and “MRF – New Beginning,” a coalition he claimed intended to close CONPI.

St. Vlas Car Fire: Cause Linked to Discarded Cigarette

by Emma Walker – News Editor July 24, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

A discarded cigarette is teh probable cause of a fire that destroyed dozens of cars in St. Vlas, according to Mayor Ivan Nikolov. The blaze ignited in dry grasses and quickly spread, prompting evacuations from nearby buildings.

Nikolov, speaking to BTA, stated that an examination of video footage and discussions with firefighters clearly indicate the fire’s origin. “Everything went from there,” he said, explaining that the flames began in a patch of dry vegetation.

Initial theories considered a piece of glass or a glass bottle acting as a lens under strong sunlight to ignite the dry grasses. Though, this possibility was later dismissed based on the evidence and videos collected.

On-site inspections are continuing as authorities work to definitively establish the incident’s causes. The thick smoke and the risk of the fire spreading necessitated the evacuation of people from adjacent structures.

Firefighting efforts successfully prevented the fire from reaching residential and hotel buildings, Nikolov confirmed. He urged both residents and tourists to exercise caution and duty, emphasizing that negligence can result in severe damage and endanger lives.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties in the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Wildfires, often exacerbated by dry conditions and human carelessness, pose a meaningful risk in many tourist destinations. The Mediterranean climate, common in regions like Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, experiences periods of drought that increase the likelihood of such incidents.Historical trends show that improper disposal of smoking materials is a leading cause of ignitions in grassy or vegetated areas. Public awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of fire safety regulations are crucial for mitigating these risks, especially during peak tourist seasons when human activity is at its highest.

Q: What caused the fire in St. Vlas?
A: A discarded cigarette is the probable cause, igniting dry grasses.

Q: Were there any injuries or fatalities?
A: No,there were no casualties reported.

Q: What was done to prevent further damage?
A: Fire teams worked to prevent the spread of the fire into residential and hotel buildings, and people from nearby structures were evacuated.

Q: What is being done to prevent future incidents?
A: The mayor has appealed to residents and tourists for a responsible attitude towards fire safety.

Hundreds of adverse reaction reports, including cases of acute pancreatitis, have prompted a new study into the potential risks associated with popular weight loss injections. The Medicines and Health products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Genomics England are urging individuals hospitalized with acute pancreatitis after using medications like Mundjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy to come forward and participate in the research.

Study Aims to Predict and Prevent side Effects

The MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme, a system for reporting problems with medicines and medical devices, is central to the investigation. Dr.Alison Cave, CEO of Safety at MHRA, stated that the study’s primary goal is to “predict which people are most at risk of side effects” [source: MHRA Yellow Card Scheme]. This proactive approach aims to minimize potential harm and ensure safer treatment options for patients.

Did You Know? The National Health Service (NHS) could save over £2.2 billion annually if genetic studies helped prevent drug side effects requiring hospital stays.

Who Can Participate?

The study is open to individuals over 18 who have experienced severe reactions, particularly acute pancreatitis requiring hospitalization, after receiving weight loss injections, whether licensed or prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Participants will be asked to provide detailed information and a saliva sample for genetic analysis.

The Role of Genetics

Researchers will analyze participants’ DNA to identify potential genetic markers that may predispose individuals to acute pancreatitis when taking these medications. Professor mat Brown, Chief Scientific Officer of Genomics England, emphasized the potential to “minimize these risks, as many side effects have a genetic cause.”

Pro Tip: Always consult with your doctor before starting any new medication, including weight loss injections, to discuss potential risks and benefits based on your individual health profile.

Pancreatitis and weight Loss Drugs: What we certainly know

While the study seeks to establish a definitive link, reports submitted to the Yellow Card website indicate that, as of May 13, there were 10 cases where patients using weight loss medicines died from the effects of pancreatitis. However, it remains unclear whether other factors contributed to these fatalities. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is also reviewing data on GLP-1 receptor agonists, the class of drugs that includes Ozempic and Wegovy, for potential links to pancreatic issues [source: EMA].

Key Facts: Weight Loss Injection Study

Weighing the Benefits and Risks

Health authorities acknowledge the potential of weight loss injections in addressing the obesity epidemic. However, they caution that these medications are not a “miraculous solution” and often come with side effects. common side effects include nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. The MHRA has also warned that Mundjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in some patients.

Toward Safer Prescriptions

The ultimate goal of the study is to generate data that will enable a more “perpetrated approach to prescriptions,” leading to safer and more effective treatments based on individual genetic profiles, according to Professor Brown. This shift towards a “prophylactic-oriented healthcare system” could considerably reduce the incidence of preventable drug side effects.

The Broader Context of Weight Management

Obesity rates have been steadily climbing worldwide, contributing to a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. While lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, remain the cornerstone of weight management, medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists have emerged as valuable tools for some individuals. However, the potential risks associated with these drugs underscore the importance of careful patient selection, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing research to ensure their safe and effective use.

frequently Asked questions About Weight Loss Injections and Pancreatitis

What is acute pancreatitis?

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. In severe cases, it can lead to complications such as infection, organ failure, and even death.

How do weight loss injections work?

Weight loss injections, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, belong to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They mimic the effects of a natural hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss.
