Unemployment Benefit โCuts โฃFace Legal โคChallenge as Letters Begin Arriving
Brussels,September โ12,2025 – Unions are preparing a multi-prongedโ legalโ challenge to proposed โคcuts to unemployment benefits following the arrival of initial notification letters from the OneM (the federal public employment service) to jobโฃ seekers.โข The โคFGTB, led by Thierry Bodson, will offer legal support to its members and is warning recipients to prepareโฃ for โpotentialโค adverse impacts.
The dispute centers on the legality of limiting unemployment benefits, with unions โคarguing theโค changes violateโ Article 23 of the Belgian Constitution, which guarantees a life lived โwithโ “human dignity.” They โalso contend the cuts contravene the principle of acquired rights, requiringโค proportionate โคjustification and reasonable โnotice before benefit reductions.
The โFGTB โคplans to send letters to its affiliates within oneโ or two days ofโฃ them receiving the โOneM notification, inviting them to collective information sessions. These sessions will clarify the implicationsโค of the OneM letter, which theโ union criticizes for its “very administrative tone” andโ omission of any mention โฃof โคthe CPAS (Public Social Welfare Centres).Attendees will also โฃbe offered assistance in filing requestsโข before the Labor Court.
“The โjob seekers affiliated to the FGTB whoโ willโ discover in their box a letter from โthe OneM will receive, โขone or two days later, a letter โfrom us,” explained Bodson. “He will invite them to participate in collective information sessions whereโค we willโค explainโข the situation preciselyโฆ And I deplore that the OneM has โeven made any mention of the CPAS. โฃIt isโค an aberration.”
The FGTBโฃ will only provide legal representation to its existing members, not those โwho recently joined. Bodson โexpressed concern โabout the number of individuals who willโข ultimately seekโข legal recourse, noting that some job seekers mistakenly believe theyโ are immuneโ to โฃthe benefit โreductions. “Someโฃ will have โคvery unpleasant surprises,” he โwarned.
Regional branches โof the โขFGTBโ haveโฃ already begun holding information sessions, encountering widespread misinformation among job seekers. The unfoldingโ situation marks โฃa significant escalation in opposition to the proposed changes to unemployment benefits.
