PKP Intercity Orders New Double-Decker Trains for Gdaลsk & Key Polish Routes inโ $1 Billion Deal
WARSAW, Poland – PKP Intercity, Poland’sโ national rail โoperator, has โselected Alstom Polska to build a new fleetโค of double-decker trains for approximately PLN 4.1 billion (roughly $1 billion USD). The contract, announced today, aims to increase capacity and comfort onโค popular domesticโ routes, including service between Warsaw and theโ Tri-City (Gdaลsk, Gdynia, sopot). The frist โtrains are expected to โenter service โขin approximately 3.5 years.
The new trainsโ will be capable of speeds up to 200 km/h and are designed to accommodate over 500 passengers โwith a focus on โฃlong-distance travel. features will โinclude pleasant, retractable seats with individual tables, armrests, โขfootrests, and adjustable lighting, alongside WiFi, electrical sockets, and USB ports. Dedicated spaces will be provided โฃfor families with children, โคcyclists, passengers with disabilities, and luggage storage.
this investment comes as PKP Intercity expands its network to connect smaller and medium-sized cities, including Suwaลki, Augustรณw, โGorzรณw Wielkopolski, zielona Gรณra, Gลogรณw, and Leszno, with both electrified and non-electrified lines.
Alongside theโฃ double-decker trains, PKP โคIntercity is also acquiring hybrid trains capable of running on both electrifiedโฃ and non-electrified lines. These โhybrid โฃunits will feature 177 seats (156 in โคsecond class and 21 in first), airโข conditioning, ergonomic seating, and individual lighting. Both trainโค types will incorporate the European ETCS train control systemโฃ for enhanced safety.
