Jochen Mass,the former Formula 1 driver,Le Mans winner,and a prominent voice in motorsport,has died at the age of 78. From the Sea to the Racetrack

Born in 1946 in Dorfen, Bavaria, Mr. Mass initially envisioned a life on the open sea,not on race tracks. Trained as a ship mechanic, he worked on ships, which he described as having soul. Though, his involvement as a route post at local races ignited his passion for motorsport. By the late 1960s, he began competing in touring car events. In 1972, he secured victory at the 24-hour race of Spa alongside Hans-Joachim Stuck, and in 1973, he finished as runner-up in Formula 2, marking his debut in Formula 1 that same year.

Mr. Mass quickly established himself in Formula 1, driving for Surtees and later McLaren, where he collaborated with stars such as Emerson fittipaldi and James Hunt. In 1975, he achieved his first and only Grand Prix victory in Barcelona, becoming only the second German to do so. However, the victory was overshadowed by an accident involving Hill driver Rolf Stommelen, which resulted in the deaths of four spectators. Mr. Mass also experienced the dangers of Formula 1 firsthand, including involvement in the fatal training accident of Gilles Villeneuve in 1982. Over his career, he accumulated 71 World Cup points in 105 grand Prix races, a significant achievement given the point distribution system of that era. Yet, his greatest successes were in long-distance racing.

Le Mans Triumph and Porsche Legacy

From the 1980s onward, Mr. Mass focused on sports car races. Having become a Porsche factory driver in 1976, he promptly achieved second place at Le Mans in 1982. His crowning achievement came in 1989 when he,along with Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens,won the 24-hour race of Le Mans driving the Sauber-Mercedes C9. He retired from active racing in 1991,leaving behind a multifaceted career. However, retirement did not mean stepping away from motorsport. Mr. Mass remained involved as a TV expert, instructor, and brand ambassador. From 1993 to 1997, he provided commentary on Formula 1 for RTL, coinciding with Michael schumacher’s rise to prominence. With his calm demeanor and subtle humor, he offered objective, competent, and charming insights.

A Respected Advisor and Personality

Mr. Mass was highly regarded for his support of young racing drivers, offering valuable advice. Michael Schumacher, in particular, valued his guidance. Mr. Mass advised him to join Ferrari in 1996, stating, If you make Ferrari strong again, you will become the king of Italy. This proved to be accurate. Mr. Mass was also a fixture in past motorsport events, such as the Mille Miglia, goodwood, and the oldtimer Grand Prix. As a Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador and passionate storyteller, he enjoyed sharing his experiences with fans and colleagues. Jochen Mass was known for being grounded, humorous, and passionate, endearing him to fans who appreciated his anecdotes from the golden age of racing.
