María Becerra: New Album, Collaboration with Corazón Serrano & Finding Healing Through Music

María Becerra’s recent performance alongside Peruvian cumbia group Corazón Serrano at a concert celebrating the band’s 33rd anniversary in Lima has marked a significant moment for the Argentine singer, demonstrating both her musical versatility and a personal journey of healing through art. The collaboration, which took place on February 6th at the Estadio San Marcos, drew thousands of attendees and has been widely discussed in Peruvian media.

Becerra, known for dominating music charts and her ability to transform personal hardship into artistic expression, described the collaboration as a challenge she readily embraced. “They reached out about four or five months ago, sending references to their songs,” Becerra told “Somos” in a recent interview. “My manager and I started listening, and we were blown away. We couldn’t believe we hadn’t discovered them before, and of course, I said yes. It’s been a pleasure from the start; I’m still connecting with the girls I sang with, we all follow each other now, we get along really well.”

The technical aspects of performing cumbia peruana presented a unique hurdle for Becerra. “When I first listened to the ‘Poco yo’ mix, I couldn’t quite grasp the timing,” she explained to “Somos.” “The timing is very different. Every phrase falls on a different beat than you’d expect. It was really difficult to learn the timings, but we managed it.”

Becerra’s latest album, “Quimera,” released after a period of intense personal loss, is central to understanding her current artistic direction. The album, and her four sold-out stadium performances at River Plate in late 2025, represent a culmination of both professional success and emotional recovery. “It was a year that I want to forget, but also one I want to remember,” Becerra said. “It had its two sides, things I want to forget and things I never want to forget. There was a lot of growth and healing in the middle. I felt like I proved to myself that I can always do a little more than I reckon, and ‘Quimera’ helped me completely heal from everything that had happened.”

The album features several collaborations, including one with J Reis on the track “Mi Amor,” which Becerra described as a particularly emotional experience. “Writing it was crazy, there was a lot of emotion, support, and something that was unlocked,” she said. “While we had talked a lot after everything happened, this was the first time I wasn’t just crying and being comforted. We’ve gone through what we’ve lived through, but we’ll always be there for each other.”

Becerra also expressed her desire to collaborate with other artists, specifically naming Milo J and, following her recent performance, Corazón Serrano. “I really like what Milo J does, I think he’s so special, he has such an incredible angel, and we get along very well,” she stated. “I love him and his mother a lot, and I would love to do a song together. And here in Peru, of course, I would love to work with Corazón Serrano, it would be a dream.”

Looking ahead, Becerra intends to replicate her 360-degree stage setup in stadiums throughout the region. The artist concluded her interview with “Somos” by expressing a desire to continue transforming personal experiences into art, suggesting that regardless of the challenges, creativity will always find a way to emerge as light.
