Amritpal Singh, a radical preacher and pro-Khalistan separatist, has surrendered to the police in Punjab’s Moga. He was arrested after addressing a gathering at a gurdwara and has been flown to Dibrugarh in Assam, where his eight associates, including his main aide Papalpreet Singh, are already being held under the National Security Act. This Act allows detention for up to a year without charge. Singh had been on the run since March 18 when the Punjab police launched a crackdown following the storming of the Ajnala police station by his supporters. His wife was stopped by immigration officials at Amritsar airport as she was trying to board a flight to London. Singh has several criminal cases registered against him, including spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants. The government accuses Singh of working to “vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of Punjab” and being a Khalistani-Pakistan agent.

Amritpal Singh, a Fugitive, Shares Video During Police Chase
Radical Sikh preacher, Amritpal Singh, wanted for an armed raid on a police station last month and has been on the run from the police for 12 days. He supports a call for a separate homeland for Sikhs, and following a crackdown on his activities, the Punjab Police have been under immense pressure to arrest him and his associates. Last night, the police launched a massive door-to-door search operation in Hoshiarpur and neighbouring villages to catch Singh and his associates who are accused in several criminal cases. Singh had plans to give an interview to an international news agency before surrendering, but changed his mind after realising that he had no chance of escaping. His whereabouts remain unknown.
30 million people in Indian state of Punjab lacking internet during manhunt
NOS News•
In the Indian state of Punjab, a manhunt for a champion of statehood has far-reaching consequences for the Sikhs: the police have shut down the internet, so that 30 million people can no longer go online. More than 110 followers of this Amritpal Singh have been arrested and weapons have been seized – Singh and his supporters carry firearms and swords.
The unrest began last month when hundreds of Singh’s supporters stormed a police station because one of his associates was detained there. On Saturday, police stopped a convoy belonging to Singh and tried unsuccessfully to arrest him. The 30-year-old activist has been on the run ever since. According to the police, he has set up a militia, the logo of which has been found on the entrance to his house and on guns and bulletproof vests that have been confiscated.
The hunt for Singh has also had consequences abroad: diplomatic posts of India have been attacked and defaced by Sikh activists in various places in the world.
Bloody operation
The reason the authorities are so keen on Singh is historical: in the 1970s and 1980s there was already a strong separatist movement in Punjab, which fought for the independent state of Khalistan, led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
At the behest of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the army intervened with a heavy hand and Bhindranwale was killed in June 1984 at the complex of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the most important shrine for the Sikhs. He had taken refuge there in the hope that he would be left undisturbed.
The bloody operation sparked outrage among Sikhs worldwide and a few months later Indira Gandhi was murdered in revenge by one of her bodyguards, who was a Sikh herself.
Less work
In the 1980s and 1990s, the Sikhs’ struggle for independence in Punjab was crushed, at the cost of some 30,000 deaths. The Indian government still looks at the state with suspicion and is therefore taking firm action against activists such as Singh.
In the background, there is dissatisfaction among the large number of farmers in Punjab, who have less and less income. Unemployment is high among young people. Singh has gained a large following on social media and that seems to be the reason why internet is now not accessible in Punjab: this is how the police want to prevent Singh from mobilizing his followers.
Amritpal supporters cleared from Sohana chowk in Mohali by Punjab Police after 3 days
Punjab’s police force arrested nearly 50 protesters and a police officer was injured after they cleared a blockade by supporters of Waris Punjab De chief and radical Sikh leader Amritpal Singh from the busy traffic junction at Sohana in Mohali. Police took action after the gurdwara management objected to the blocking of the crossing to the place of worship. Swords, spears and farm implements were recovered from the protesters. After the police removed barricades on both sides of the road, they opened the crossing for traffic to ply, but a group of armed youngsters arrived and stopped traffic. As they surrounded a journalist, a police officer went to his rescue and suffered facial injuries.
Khalistan organization attacked police station; Amritpal Singh threatened leader Amit Shah
Amritsar – The followers of Amritpal Singh, who is pro-Khalistan and head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization, attacked the Ajnala police station in Amritsar district. 6 policemen were injured in the ensuing encounter. Around 2,000 people carrying guns and swords raised Khalistan slogans and unleashed violence demanding the release of activist Toofan Singh. The gang retreated to a nearby gurdwara after being assured of Lovepreet’s release.
A case was registered against Amritpal and his followers on the 16th in the case of the kidnapping of Varinder Singh. Lovepreet was arrested on 18th in this case. Commissioner Jaskaran Singh said that Amritpal has given documents proving that Lovepreet is innocent and was not present at the place and he will be released. A special investigation team will look into the case against Amritpal and others.
The incidents took place yesterday that put the Punjab Police on edge. Amritpal’s followers had started organizing near the station since morning. People came from nearby districts. Attempts were made to stop the march at the Dhilwan Toll Plaza in Kapurthala but failed. Even before reaching the station, the barricades were raised, but the protesters crossed it and entered the station premises and unleashed violence. With this, the top police officials held a discussion.
Amritpal Singh threatened Amit Shah
Amritpal Singh (30) is the one who recently threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the fate of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was shot dead by Khalistan terrorists, will come. This was when Amit Shah announced that he would not allow the Khalistan movement to go ahead.
The organization ‘Waris Punjab De’ was founded by actor and activist Deep Sidhu. The police had registered a case against Sidhu who infiltrated among the farmers’ protesters and tried to hoist the Khalistan flag at the Red Fort on Republic Day 2021. Sidhu died in a car accident in February. Then Amritpal Singh who was in Dubai took charge.
