Punjab to Adopt “One Standard” for Uniform Infrastructure Development | Maryam Nawaz

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has initiated a province-wide plan to standardize infrastructure and design, aiming for uniform development and enhanced urban planning across the region. The initiative, announced following a special meeting with provincial officials, seeks to establish a consistent aesthetic and functional approach to public works.

The core of the policy, dubbed “One Punjab, One Standard,” will apply to roads, green spaces, signage, and pedestrian walkways. Beyond these core elements, the standardization effort will extend to the architectural designs of essential public facilities including schools, hospitals, and bus terminals. According to officials present at the meeting, the goal is to create a cohesive visual identity throughout Punjab.

A key component of the plan involves the creation of an autonomous authority tasked with overseeing the implementation of these standards and driving broader urban design reforms. This body will be responsible for ensuring consistent application of the new guidelines and addressing any challenges that arise during the transition. The proposal also includes standardized designs for roadside kiosks and small commercial cabins along major highways, a move intended to improve the overall appearance of transportation corridors.

Chief Minister Sharif has directed authorities to develop a comprehensive design manual outlining the standardized specifications. “Discipline is the true beauty of development,” she stated, adding that the initiative will ensure a unified identity for Punjab. “From Lahore to Rajanpur, every street will be organised, every highway aesthetically pleasing, and every institution a model of order.”

According to a profile published by Wikipedia, Maryam Nawaz Sharif assumed the office of Chief Minister of Punjab on February 26, 2024, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She was elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab representing Lahore in the February 2024 general election. Prior to her current role, she served as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme from 2013 to 2014.

The Chief Minister emphasized that uniform infrastructure and road furniture designs will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of cities but also foster a stronger sense of urban cohesion across the province. The implementation timeline and specific budgetary allocations for the initiative were not disclosed following the meeting, but officials indicated that further details would be released in the coming weeks.
