State Workers May Receive Increased Bonuses of โขS/ 1,130 โfor โPatrias and Christmas
LIMA – Public sector employees in Peru could see aโข significant โขboost โคto โtheir year-end bonuses, potentially โฃreceiving โฃa combined totalโข of S/ 1,130 for the Patrias and Christmas โคcelebrations, under a new legislative proposal currently under consideration by Congress. โThe proposal seeks to double the existing bonus amounts, a move that isโค already drawing scrutiny regarding its financial sustainability and constitutionalโฃ legality.
The initiative, gaining traction as Peru approaches a new โelectoral process, wouldโ increase both the โPatrias โคand Christmas bonusesโค for state workers. While proponents โsuggest theโ measure would โprovide economic relief, โcritics argue it’s a populist move lacking a solid financial foundation.
“This type โฃofโค initiatives reinforce the popularity โขof theโ proponents, but without guaranteeing that thay are sustainable over time,” stated an unnamed source familiar with the โdiscussions.
Legal experts โฃare โalso raising concerns.โข Cรฉsar Pontriano, aโ partner at the Muรฑiz Study, points to โa potential conflict with legislative โpowers. “Theโฃ Congress โofโ the Republic hasโ no spending initiative. In โขaddition, it isโ anti-technician to double the โขcost of theโ bonus โwithout dimensioningโ its real impact on the public treasure. โคWho must โคdefine whether there is a budget to pay this amount is โthe โฃMEF, not โCongress,” he โฃexplained.
Pontriano further characterized the proposal as part of a continuing trend of “populist projects โin a pre-election context.”
The government currently delivers an Aguinaldo โof S/ 300 to public sector workers, with specific requirementsโฃ set byโ the Ministry โฃof Economy โand Finance โ(MEF). The proposed increase would substantiallyโ expand thisโข benefit,โ butโ its feasibility โฃremains uncertain given โbudgetary constraints and the MEF’s role in determiningโข available funds.
