PlayStation 5 Pro: Is the Upgrade Worth It? – Specs, Performance & Who Should Buy

Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, a modern console iteration focused on delivering enhanced graphics and performance for existing PlayStation 5 titles. The announcement, detailed on the official PlayStation website, centers on a significant upgrade to the GPU, improved ray tracing capabilities, and the introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is positioned as a high-end option within the current console generation, targeting players who prioritize visual fidelity and frame rates. According to Sony, the console will allow game developers to leverage advanced features to improve the experience on 4K televisions. A key component of this improvement is PSSR, an AI-enhanced upscaling technology designed to deliver sharper images with greater detail. Similar to technologies like DLSS from Nvidia and FSR from AMD, PSSR renders games internally at a lower resolution and then reconstructs a higher-resolution image.

Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us series, is already preparing updates for both The Last of Us Part II Remastered and The Last of Us Part I Remastered specifically for the PS5 Pro. Vincent Marxen, Lead Programmer at Naughty Dog, stated that the updates will include a new rendering mode that utilizes the improved graphics processing power to render at 1440p and upscale to 4K using PSSR, maintaining a target frame rate of 60fps. This approach aims to strike a balance between visual quality and performance.

The core of the PS5 Pro’s performance gains lies in its upgraded GPU. While Sony has not released specific technical specifications, the company highlights increased compute units, higher clock frequencies, and an architecture optimized for modern graphical effects like ray tracing. This enhanced GPU aims to alleviate the compromises often made on the standard PlayStation 5, where developers frequently had to choose between ray tracing and maintaining high frame rates. The PS5 Pro intends to allow for both, enabling more realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows without sacrificing smooth gameplay.

The console is available in bundles that include two DualSense controllers, as offered by retailers like Best Buy and Amazon. A bundle available through Amazon and Walmart includes a 2TB SSD digital console, two controllers – one in White and one in Chroma Pearl – and a Dual Controller Charger.

While the CPU remains closer to the standard PlayStation 5, Sony emphasizes that many modern games are GPU-bound, particularly those utilizing ray tracing and high resolutions. The focus on GPU performance and intelligent upscaling reflects this understanding, positioning the PS5 Pro as a refined iteration rather than a complete overhaul of the existing generation. The company intends for the PS5 Pro to be the target platform for developers seeking to maximize visual fidelity within the PlayStation ecosystem.
