Meghan Markle‘s Christmas Special Trailer Draws Criticism, overshadowing royal Variety performance
The trailer for Meghan Markle’s upcoming Netflix special, With Love, Meghan: A holiday Festivity, has sparked criticism, with some labeling it “cringey” and questioning its timing. The Duchess of Sussex shared the clip on Instagram on Wednesday, November 19th, and it features a rare public display of affection – a kiss with Prince Harry.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams expressed concerns that the trailer relies too heavily on celebrity guests like Naomi Osaka and Tom Colicchio to broaden its appeal, stating, “Meghan’s new trailer for her festive special needed Serena Williams or another famous name to enable it to reach beyond the smiley, cringey world she has created, which isn’t likely to go anywhere new.” He further questioned the value of the series for Netflix, adding, “I strongly doubt that Netflix will want more of what she’s produced so far in With Love, Meghan in the New Year. You see this and wonder what is in it for the streaming giant.”
Fitzwilliams also criticized the timing of the trailer’s release, suggesting it would likely garner more media attention than Prince William and Princess Catherine’s appearance at the Royal Variety Performance on the same evening. He described the timing as ”execrable.”
The trailer offers a glimpse into how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrate the holidays, having spent each year since 2018 in Canada or the US.It shows Meghan preparing a holiday wreath, wrapping presents, and stating, “Being a hostess or a host is about making people feel comfortable.”
The special is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 3rd. Fitzwilliams also alluded to Prince Harry’s reported offer to share diaries, suggesting the special might relegate him to a secondary role, warning, “he should beware, it might potentially be a sign.”
