Preventive Prison Ordered in Osorno โHospital Torture Case
Two ofโค the four individuals formalized in connection with the โขallegedโค torture of a coworkerโข at the Osorno Hospital haveโข been ordered to โคremain in preventative prison. The charges stem from โฃincidents involvingโ aโฃ hospital employee with autism โspectrum disorder (TEA).
The prosecutor,โ Marรญa Angรฉlica de Miguel, detailed the charges, based โฃon articleโข 150,โ letter A of the Criminal Code, which addressesโ the abuse of power by public officials resulting in torture. She emphasized theโค severity of the alleged acts, describing them as “one of theโ moast degradingโฆintimidating, and denigrating” actions possible against a person.
The โcase arose after videos โsurfaced showing theโ victim struggling with โขone of the accused. De Miguel โขclarified thatโฃ a previous complaint filedโ in 2020 involved โฃinjuries sustained by the victim, resulting in a conditional suspensionโค of proceedings โagainst โขone of โthe accused for less serious injuries. โฃHowever, she stressed thisโ was “aโค totallyโฃ diffrent fact than what it is โขtoday,” and that the Prosecutor’s Office did โขnot have โฃaccessโค to theโ recently publicized videos untilโข thay were released by the media.
A separate 2024โข complaint regarding degrading treatment wasโค also filed, but lacked accompanying video evidence and was unable to be substantiated at that time,โข thoughโ the case remains open andโ is connected to the current proceedings.
The fourโ individuals were arrestedโค by โคthe Sexual Crimes โขResearch Brigadeโ (Brisex)โข of โคtheโค Losโฃ Lagos PDI between Thursday and Friday. The Ministry ofโฃ Health has requested the dismissal of all โfour officialsโ involved, whoโ had remained on duty at theโฃ hospital prior to the โฃrequest.
The prosecutor’s officeโ isโ investigating โwhether the Osorno โฃbase hospital was aware of the images before they became public.
