UN Humanitarianโ Convoy Hit inโ Kherson Region,โค Raising Concerns of Escalation
Kherson,โ Ukraine – A United Nations humanitarian โขconvoy was โstruck in the Kherson region today, โprompting internationalโ condemnation and raising โfearsโ of further escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and โขRussia. Details remain scarce, but initial reportsโ confirmโ theโ incident โoccurred whileโค the convoy โคwas delivering โaid to โcivilians.
The largest โคnuclear power plant in Europe, โคcurrently occupied by โRussia, has โฃbeen โrepeatedly targeted by attacks or sabotages as the beginning of the military invasion in February 2022, with both sides accusing the other of responsibility.
According to the โฃEuropean diplomat, the CEO โคof the International Atomic Energy agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossiโข proposes to restore the โฃsupply of external energy to the Zaporizhzhia โpower plant in two phases. The Russian diplomat confirmedโ some aspects โof the plan.
Inโฃ the first phase of Grossi’s plan, a ceasefireโ zone should be โคestablished within a โขcircle of approximately 1.5 kilometers to โคallow the repair โof the main power line, which has been damaged in the area under Russianโ control. โขTheโ secondโ phase anticipates โฃtheโค establishmentโฃ of another such zone to repair backup lines located in โterritory controlled by Ukraine.
Repairs were initially scheduledโข between โฃOctober 11 and 17, โbut haveโข not yet begun. The Ukrainian side reportedly providedโฃ guarantees โขfor the safe passage of repair crews, while russia โhas yet to โprovide similar assurances. The Russian diplomat stated that preparations for repairs are ongoing and work could commence soon.
The โขIAEA reported earlier in October that the Zaporizhzhia plant is not โคcurrently in โimmediate โฃdanger, relying on backup diesel generators for cooling. Eight generators are operational, one is โon standby, and three are undergoing maintenance.
the current disruption in power supply to the plant is the longest since theโฃ start ofโ theโ war. The 330-kilovoltโ backup line was disconnected in May, and theโค main โ750-kilovolt circuit has been interrupted since September 23. (TASR)
