BOGOTร – Presidentโข gustavo Petro confirmed teh deaths of at least a dozen minors during military bombings in 2023 and 2024, sparking aโ heated exchange with Human Rights Defender Irisโค Marรญn over the continuation of such โoperations. Petro directly accused Ivรกn Mordisco, a leaderโข of the Estado Mayorโข Central โ(EMC) dissident group, of violating the Rome Statute โand vowed to denounce him as a war criminal for allegedly forcingโ minors into armed conflict.
The controversy centers on recent military actions in guaviare, Arauca, and cauca, where 34 individuals were reportedly “neutralized” โคand over 35 rifles recovered. Petroโ defended the bombings as a necessary responseโฃ to offensive actions by armed drug trafficking groups, asserting thatโฃ all military operations adhere to International Humanitarian Law (IHL).โ However, โMarรญn implored Petro andโ Defense Minister Pedroโ Sรกnchez to suspend theโ bombings, specifically targeting โareasโค where minors may be present, citing โadditionalโ deaths of โchildren โin public force bombings.
“All of them victims โof forcedโค recruitment by criminals that have led them to hostilitiesโฃ andโข taken away their protection therein,” Petro stated. He further reported the deathโ of a girl injured โฃby EMC columns on the pan-American highway in Cauca and the finding of a brother of “Chiquito โคMalo” โof the Clan del Golfo, killed inโข Urabรก.
Marรญn countered byโ demanding the unconditional release of all recruited minors, revealing thatโข other children have been killed in military bombings. Petro responded that offensive actions by armed groups โขwould not result inโฃ a suspension of bombings, emphasizing, โข”military action โขis not the best, but if certain groups doโค not want to make peace, we โฃwillโค act.”
