ZTE: Affordable Tech & The Future of AI in Smartphones – Hungary Focus

Budapest – As premium smartphone prices approach the cost of a monthly salary for many Hungarians, ZTE Hungary is positioning itself as a provider of accessible technology, rather than a purveyor of luxury goods. The company’s strategy centers on delivering modern features without the hefty price tag traditionally associated with flagship devices.

“The question is no longer whether premium technology exists, but who can build it accessible,” said László Kocsis, Terminal Sales Director at ZTE Hungary. “We don’t aim to have the most expensive phone in hand. We wish the user to feel they’ve made a smart decision.”

ZTE, historically known for its network infrastructure, is actively building its consumer presence in Hungary. This approach diverges from the industry trend of marketing smartphones as status symbols, instead emphasizing functionality and value. The company operates three brands in the mobile market: ZTE Blade, nubia, and RedMagic. While RedMagic, focused on professional mobile gaming, isn’t currently sold domestically, it is available to Hungarian consumers through European distribution channels.

The ZTE Blade series targets the mid-range market, offering features like large batteries, stable performance, and increasingly, 5G connectivity. The nubia line, meanwhile, caters to a younger demographic with bolder designs and specifications, including foldable displays like those found in the nubia Flip series, offered at a more competitive price point than rival foldable phones. “A foldable phone doesn’t have to be a status symbol today. Innovation is exciting when it’s accessible,” Kocsis added.

This strategy appears to be resonating with Hungarian consumers. ZTE Hungary’s terminal business reported a record year in 2025, with nubia device sales quadrupling and overall revenue increasing by more than 50 percent compared to the previous year, according to the company. Kocsis attributes this growth to a conscious effort by consumers to seek brands that offer genuine value.

Beyond smartphones, ZTE is expanding its ecosystem to include routers, network devices, digital solutions, and smartwatches for children. Hungary is not being treated as a testing ground, but as a strategic market, with international experience adapted to local needs. The company’s consumer strategy extends beyond simply selling devices.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is too playing a role in ZTE’s approach. The company is integrating AI features – such as real-time translation, enhanced image processing, and system optimization – across its product lines, aiming to make these capabilities available beyond the premium segment. ZTE’s “AI for All” philosophy reflects this commitment.

The Hungarian market is described as price-sensitive yet open to new technologies. The price-to-value ratio is crucial, but interest in innovation remains strong. The company’s success suggests a shift in consumer priorities, with buyers increasingly focused on practical functionality over brand prestige.
