Lidl Prices: Save Money on Groceries During Inflation – 2026 Update

Slovakia is experiencing significant food price inflation, with the cost of groceries remaining a major concern for households despite signs of overall inflation stabilization. While the rate of price increases has slowed compared to recent years, consumers are still feeling the pinch at the checkout, particularly for essential items.

Data from the Statistical Office of Slovakia and the National Bank of Slovakia indicate that inflation in Slovakia reached 4% in January 2026. Although this figure represents an increase compared to the previous year, experts anticipate a stabilization in the coming months. Though, this stabilization does not signal a return to pre-inflation price levels. Manufacturers continue to face elevated input costs – including energy, transportation, and wages – which are being passed on to consumers.

Recent analysis reveals a notable disparity in pricing between retail chains. Lidl, a discount supermarket, has demonstrated a significant reduction in the cost of a standard basket of goods. According to a comparison conducted by Lidl, the same shopping basket that cost €24.98 a year ago now costs €19.73 – a decrease of 23%, representing a saving of almost €6 per purchase. This comparison focuses on everyday items such as milk, flour, bread, mozzarella, sour cream, and toilet paper, and reflects standard, not promotional, pricing.

For a household making such a purchase four times a month, the savings could exceed €20. Lidl attributes its ability to maintain lower prices, in part, to its strong focus on private-label brands. These brands have gained consumer trust not only for their affordability but also for their quality. This allows shoppers to avoid waiting for sales or collecting coupons, benefiting from consistently low prices.

Specific examples highlight the savings available at Lidl. A liter of semi-skimmed Pilos milk is priced at €0.80, while 125g of Pilos butter costs just €0.99. Pork steak without bone is available for €4.99 per kilogram, and Atlantic salmon is offered at a reduced price of €1.49 per 100g.

The changing economic landscape is influencing Slovak consumers’ shopping habits. Where brand loyalty and habit once dominated purchasing decisions, households are now increasingly prioritizing value for money and seeking sustainable solutions for their budgets. Lidl’s discount model, built on a combination of strong private labels and stable pricing, appears to be resonating with shoppers seeking to manage rising costs. The retailer’s approach offers consumers simplified budgeting and the convenience of finding everything they need in one location, without relying on short-term promotions.

The current situation underscores the importance of specific price points in a period of inflation. A 21% difference in the cost of a typical shopping basket is substantial, particularly when considered over a weekly or monthly timeframe. As economic conditions continue to evolve, informed purchasing decisions are becoming increasingly crucial for households across Slovakia.
