CARACAS, Venezuela – The Serie de Las Americas continued on Wednesday, February 11th, with a day of compelling baseball action. Argentina’s Club Daom pulled off a stunning upset, Cuba secured a spot in the semifinals, and Venezuela continued its dominant run through the tournament. The competition is heating up as teams battle for position heading into the playoff rounds.
Argentina Stuns Panama
In a back-and-forth affair, Club Daom of Argentina defeated the tournament-leading Águilas Metropolitanas of Panama 10-6. A grand slam by Venezuelan player Danyer Sanabria in the seventh inning proved to be the turning point, shifting the momentum firmly in Argentina’s favor. Panama had built a 6-3 lead, but their bullpen faltered, allowing Argentina to score nine runs between the sixth and eighth innings. Luis Machuca delivered a strong start for Argentina, conceding only one run in five innings pitched. Sanabria finished the game with six RBIs, while Agustín Sanabria contributed a double and two RBIs. Carlos Parra closed out the game with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, earning the win. David Rodríguez hit a home run for Panama.
Cuba Clinches Semifinal Berth
Cuba punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-7 victory over Colombia’s Caimanes de Barranquilla. The game was a nail-biter, with Cuba holding a three-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Colombia mounted a furious rally, scoring two runs and putting the tying run on base. With the game on the line, Cuba manager turned to José Miguel Rodríguez, who recorded the final out via strikeout, securing the save. Jesús Marriaga drove in five runs for Colombia in a losing effort. Alfredo Despaigne, Harol Vázquez (with his second home run of the tournament), and Yoel Yanqui all went deep for Cuba, while Carlos Martínez homered for Colombia.
Venezuela Remains Unbeaten
Venezuela’s Magallanes continued their impressive form with a decisive 12-4 win over Curazao. Yohander Méndez pitched five innings, allowing only one earned run, and received ample support from his teammates. Luis Sardiñas had a standout performance with four hits, while Renato Núñez hit a home run and drove in three runs. Rómer Cuadrado added a double and scored three times. Magallanes have now won five consecutive games and are tied with Panama for the top spot in the standings. They have not lost since the opening day of the tournament.
