Pope Leo XIV to Open 188th General Chapter of the Augustinian Order
Vatican city – Pope Leo XIV will inaugurate the 188th General Chapter of the Order of Saint Augustine on September 1st with a Mass celebrated at 6:00 p.m. in the Basilica of San agustín in Campo Marzio, Rome. The opening Mass coincides with the anniversary of the Pope’s entry into the novitiate in 1977.
The General Chapter, a key event for the Augustinian Order held every six years, will continue until September 18th at the Pontifical Patristical Institute Augustinianum. Approximately one hundred Augustinian religious will participate, with 73 delegates representing 41 constituencies from 46 different countries holding voting rights. These delegates will be tasked with electing the 98th general Prior, succeeding Father Alejandro Moral after his completion of two six-year terms.
The Order, as of December 31, 2024, comprises 2341 Augustinians serving in 395 houses across five continents. Sessions during the Chapter will also include presentations from leaders of Augustinian nuns’ federations and the Augustinian lay family, though they will not have a vote.
This marks a continuation of papal involvement in the General Chapter, as Pope Francis presided over the opening mass of the 2013 Chapter, which concluded the mandate of then-Prior General Robert Prevost. During that homily, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of spiritual restlessness, drawing parallels to the life of Saint Augustine and urging attendees to continually seek God and serve others.
The Mass and subsequent proceedings will be broadcast live on Italian Vatican Radio, beginning at 17:55 (Italian time), in Italian, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Polish. Audio streaming will be available on the language-specific pages of Vatican News, with video coverage on the Vatican News portal, Facebook, and YouTube.
