Prabowo Subianto Signals Openness too Review of Publicโ Demands Following Protests
Hambalang, โคWestโ java – โขDefense Minister Prabowo Subianto has โresponded to a โฃlist of 17+8 โdemands presented by โคdemonstrators, indicating โคa willingness to discuss and perhaps act upon some of the โขconcerns raised. The demands stemโ from recent public demonstrations and cover a range of issues, including calls โfor an independent investigation into specific cases and a re-evaluation of the military’s role inโ civil security. The acknowledgment comesโค at a pivotal moment as the new governance seeks to establish a dialogโข with the public and address grievances. The demandsโฃ reflect widespread concerns about issues ranging from human rights to security sector reform, and Subianto’s response suggests a potential shift towards โgreaterโ transparency and accountability. The outcome of these discussionsโฃ could โsubstantially impact โขpublic trust and โขshape the government’s policy agenda โin the coming months.
Subianto stated that many of the demands were “reasonable” and open to negotiation. “Yes, I thinkโข we learn some reasonable, some of us can negotiate, we can argue. Yes, โขI say โฃthat my demands make a โlot of sense, many that I think are normative. And we can discuss it well,” he said this weekend in Hambalang.
Specifically, Subianto expressed support forโค the formation of โฃan independent investigation team to examine the caseโ of Affanโ Kurniawan,โค deeming the requestโข “veryโค reasonable”โ andโฃ stating it “makes sense” and “canโ be discussed.” He added, “later โคwe โฃwill see the rich โคshape How.”
However, Subianto indicated that the demand for theโ withdrawal of the Indonesian National Armed โForces (TNI) from civil security roles โwas moreโ complex. He asserted that the โฃTNI has a constitutional โduty to protect the public โfrom threats, including terrorism andโ civil unrest. “So terrorism is a threat, burning threats, making riots threats to the people, the periodโ of pulling the TNI from civil security,in my opinion debatable,Butโ I will carry out โคthe tasksโ given by the โConstitution to me,” he explained.
