Delhiโค Hosts โFitness Events Amid ‘Severe’โข Airโฃ Pollution,Raising Health Concerns
Delhi residents participated in a marathon, cyclothon, and cycling initiative over the weekend, even as the city’s air โquality indexโ (AQI)โข reached “severe” levels, prompting questions aboutโข public health and event planning. The Indian โAir Force marathonโ was flagged off from Jawaharlal nehru Stadium on Sunday with the AQI near 400.
Theโข events – including a ‘cyclothon’ atโฃ the PNB head office in Dwarka under Vigilance Awareness Week 2025, and ‘Fitโ India Sundayโฃ on Cycle’ a nationwide initiativeโข by the Union Ministry ofโฃ Youth Affairs and Sports – occurred as Delhi grapples with hazardous air quality.Experts predict the air quality will remain “very โpoor” until November 4.
Accordingโฃ to the Centralโค Pollution Control Board (CPCB), seventeen monitoring stations recorded ‘severe’ air quality with readings above 400 on Sunday. Wazirpur registered the highest AQI at 439, while twentyโ other stations reported โ’veryโ poor’ airโ quality, exceeding 300, โฃas per the CPCB’sโ Sameer app.
Social media โคusers questioned the decision to โคhold outdoorโ fitness โevents during such conditions, with one asking,”Where is our intelligence and what โขhappened to GRAP?” Another user stated thatโ participatingโฃ in a marathon in โthe current pollution levels was โ”nothing short of suicidal.”
A recent study indicated that one in seven deaths in Delhi in โข2023 were โขlinked to airโค pollution. Additionally, medical professionals have โwarned that Delhi’s pollution could increase the risk ofโข rheumatoidโ arthritis.
