Turkey-Cyprus Tensions: Erdoğan, US Relations & Regional Developments

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 26, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Nikos Hristodulidis, the President of Cyprus, extended an invitation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to participate in discussions related to upcoming European Union meetings, according to statements released in late December 2025 and January 2026. The invitations are linked to Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the EU Council, scheduled to commence in the first half of 2026.

Hristodulidis initially announced his intention to invite Erdoğan and Fidan in December, framing the potential participation as crucial for discussions surrounding the EU’s agenda. He specifically mentioned a planned regional summit focused on the Middle East, stating, “Erdoğan will certainly be invited to this summit,” as reported by Cumhuriyet newspaper on June 30, 2025. The president emphasized that Turkey, as a neighbor to Cyprus, would inevitably be involved in regional discussions.

However, subsequent reports indicate that the initial response from the Turkish side was not positive. Speaking to SKAI television on January 21, 2026, Hristodulidis acknowledged the lukewarm reception, but affirmed that Cyprus would continue its efforts to foster positive developments. “The Turkish side’s first response was not positive, but we will continue our efforts for positive developments,” he stated, according to Haberkibris.

The invitations come as Cyprus prepares to assume the EU Council presidency, a role Hristodulidis described as a “national duty” for a small member state. During a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Lefkosia, Hristodulidis outlined key priorities for the presidency, including strengthening the EU’s strategic autonomy and enhancing capacity in areas such as entrepreneurship, security, and migration. Metsola, in turn, stated that “the Cyprus issue is similarly a problem for Europe,” signaling European Parliament support for a resolution to the ongoing dispute.

Hristodulidis also highlighted Cyprus’s ambition to act as a bridge between the EU and the United States during its presidency. This role was emphasized in a statement following a meeting with Metsola, where he noted that Cyprus would seek to facilitate cooperation between the two blocs. The potential for Cyprus to serve as a diplomatic hub is further underscored by the planned regional summit on the Middle East, which aims to address issues of regional stability.

As of late January 2026, it remains unclear whether Erdoğan will accept the invitation to the planned summit in April 2026. The Turkish president has not previously visited the Greek Cypriot administration.

Petr Pavel’s Re-election Chances & 2028 Presidential Candidates

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 20, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Prague – Current Czech President Petr Pavel maintains a strong position as he potentially seeks re-election, according to a new survey by NMS Market Research. The poll, conducted in mid-February, found that 36 percent of respondents view Pavel favorably, with an additional 18 percent leaning positively. Conversely, 14 percent view him unfavorably, while 30 percent hold a decidedly negative opinion.

Pavel’s current term is set to expire on March 9, 2028, with the first round of the next presidential election anticipated in January of that year. The NMS research indicates a significant divide in voter perception based on political affiliation. Four out of five opposition voters view the president favorably, while three out of five voters aligned with the current government hold a decidedly negative view.

While Pavel appears well-positioned, Andrej Babiš, the former Prime Minister and leader of the ANO party, ranks second in potential candidate popularity. Babiš receives a positive assessment from 17 percent of respondents, with a further 26 percent leaning positively. However, Babiš, who lost to Pavel in the 2023 presidential election, has stated he will not run again, announcing his decision on Instagram earlier this year.

Other figures within ANO demonstrate lower levels of support. First Deputy Chairman and Minister of Industry, Karel Havlíček, is viewed positively by 39 percent of those surveyed, while Deputy Chairman and Finance Minister Alena Schillerová receives positive ratings from 34 percent. “The governing coalition will certainly seek to put forward its own candidate, but the chances of the main trio of ANO politicians are little,” said Tereza Friedrichová, a political analyst at NMS. “If they want to defeat Petr Pavel, they should consider supporting a non-partisan candidate.”

Speculation has emerged regarding potential candidates beyond Pavel and the ANO leadership. Ivan Tykač, whose husband Pavel recently acquired a stake in the Mafra publishing house and sponsors the Václav Klaus Institute, has been mentioned as a possible contender. Tykač is politically close to the SPD party, with Marek Prchal, a former ANO advisor, serving as her media consultant. The NMS poll shows 17 percent of Czechs view Tykač positively, 28 percent negatively, and a substantial 55 percent remain undecided or unfamiliar with her.

In comparison, Supreme State Prosecutor Lenka Bradáčová enjoys a more established public profile, with 41 percent viewing her positively and 34 percent negatively. However, Bradáčová has indicated she is not currently considering a run for the presidency, though a source within Novinky suggests she might consider a bid after the conclusion of Pavel’s potential second term.

Filip Turek, whose nomination as Minister of the Environment was rejected by Pavel, faces the highest level of negative public perception among potential candidates. 54 percent of respondents view Turek decidedly negatively, with an additional 18 percent leaning negatively. Only 7 percent view him positively.

The NMS survey, which included 1001 respondents, also gauged support for Pavel seeking a second term. 39 percent of Czechs believe he should definitely run again, with an additional 13 percent expressing support. This brings total support for another Pavel run to approximately 52 percent. However, nearly 40 percent are either decidedly or somewhat opposed to his re-election.

Friedrichová noted that Pavel benefited from partial support from voters within the current governing coalition during the 2023 election, including a majority of voters for the Motorist party. She added that public support is now more polarized, but that Pavel still has the potential to appeal to up to a fifth of the governing coalition’s voters, suggesting his chances of re-election remain significant.

Pavel Warns Reduced Defence Spending Would Damage Czech Republic’s Credibility | Ukraine Support Key

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 17, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Czech President Petr Pavel has warned that a proposed reduction in the Czech Republic’s defense budget would undermine the country’s credibility as an ally, particularly in the eyes of Ukraine. Pavel’s comments came as a parliamentary committee recommended approval of a defense budget totaling 154.79 billion Czech crowns (approximately $6.7 billion USD) for the current year, a figure significantly lower than the 175.79 billion crowns initially proposed by the government of Prime Minister Petr Fiala.

The proposed budget represents just 1.73 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), falling short of the NATO-mandated commitment of at least 2 percent. A previous government proposal, under former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, had allocated 185 billion crowns to defense, equating to 2.06 percent of GDP, but this figure included expenditures from other ministries, such as transport and interior affairs.

“If the budget were to remain as currently proposed, we would be one of the few countries to choose the opposite trend,” Pavel stated, adding that such a move would “significantly undermine the credibility of the Czech Republic as a partner and ally, not only in the eyes of our allies but likewise in the eyes of Ukraine.” He indicated he would discuss the matter further with Prime Minister Fiala and Finance Minister Alena Schillerová.

Pavel emphasized the importance of taking security concerns seriously, particularly in maintaining strong relations with the United States, regardless of who occupies the presidency. He relayed what he described as a consistent message from the U.S. Government: “Europeans, stand on your own feet and ensure your own security. Our taxpayers cannot pay for your security.”

The debate over the defense budget comes as the Czech Republic considers providing further assistance to Ukraine. Earlier this month, President Pavel stated that Prague could supply Ukraine with drone-fighting jets, according to AeroTime. However, a plan to send L-159 light fighter jets to Ukraine was recently blocked by the Czech government, as reported by The Aviationist.

Separately, concerns have been raised regarding the activities of Hennlich, a company based in Litoměřice, Czech Republic, which is reportedly providing aid to Ukraine while simultaneously maintaining business ties with Russia, according to Investigace.cz.

Recent reports also indicate a decline in Czech public trust in the United States, potentially linked to shifts in U.S. Policy regarding the war in Ukraine, according to Expats.cz.

Czech Republic to Seize Assets Linked to Crime, Even Without Conviction

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 17, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

The Czech government approved a bill earlier this month designed to allow authorities to seize assets suspected of illicit origin, even without a direct link to a specific crime. The legislation, championed by Justice Minister Jiří Tejic, aims to combat money laundering and disrupt criminal networks operating within the country.

According to Tejic, the law will target funds flowing through Czech “transit accounts” – those used briefly to deposit and then quickly transfer money, effectively laundering it. “The money simply warms up on these so-called transit accounts and then flows on, thereby legalizing it,” he explained. He added that this method is also used to launder proceeds from drug trafficking and tax fraud.

Lukáš Kraus, a lawyer and coordinator for the Odolné Česko (Resilient Czechia) initiative, stated that as much as 100 billion Czech crowns (approximately $4.3 billion USD) passed through the Czech Republic in 2020, and 2021. Kraus highlighted the case of Mikhail Gutseriev, a Russian businessman subject to sanctions, whose refinery sent 750 million Czech crowns to a newly established Czech firm. A significant portion of that sum was then allegedly routed to companies in the British Virgin Islands, a pattern investigators identified as sophisticated money laundering.

Currently, Czech authorities can seize suspicious funds, but are required to release them if investigators cannot connect them to a specific criminal offense. The new law seeks to overcome this obstacle, particularly in cases involving international cooperation – or lack thereof – such as those involving Russian entities.

The previous government, led by Petr Fiala, had tasked then-Justice Minister Pavel Blažek with drafting a similar law by the finish of 2024, but the effort stalled following October’s parliamentary elections. The current bill fulfills a directive issued at the European level.

Under the proposed legislation, if the value of the assets exceeds one million Czech crowns and involves an organized crime group, a court can order the forfeiture of the assets in a public hearing. The owner of the funds would have the opportunity to demonstrate legitimate ownership.

The Ministry of Finance initially expressed concerns about the bill’s constitutionality, arguing it could infringe on property rights. Tejic stated that his ministry responded to the criticism and revised the proposal, including expanding the accompanying report to address constitutional concerns. “The final version of the proposal was submitted to the government without objection, and Notice currently no doubts about its constitutionality,” he said.

It remains unclear whether the bill will pass through the Chamber of Deputies. The Justice Ministry maintains it has done everything possible to ensure broad acceptance of the legislation.
