Beating the Heat: How Tokyo‘s Ueno Zoo โKeeps its Animals Cool During Scorching Summers
Tokyo, Japan – As Japan swelters throughโฃ another intense summer, withโข temperatures and โขhumidityโฃ soaring in mid-August, concerns extend beyond โhuman comfort. At Ueno โzoological gardens, tokyo’s oldest and most popular zoo, staff are workingโ tirelessly to protect their animalโ residents – many hailingโ from vastly different, โcooler climates – from the relentless heat.
Visitors seeking respite from โขthe scorching sun themselvesโ are utilizing โคparasols,โ electric โคfans, and โขmisting stations โฃthroughout theโ zoo. But what measuresโ are being taken behind the scenes to ensure the well-being of the โanimals, from polar bears โto โpandas?
“We’re doing our utmost to prevent the animalsโ from suffering,” explains Mikako โคKaneko,Deputy Director and Public Relations Manager at Ueno Zoo.”We have detailed handbooks for each species outliningโข ideal enclosure sizes, dietary needs, and, โฃcrucially, optimal temperature ranges.”
The โzoo’s proactive approach extends to constant monitoring. Zookeepers are equipped with thermometers and hygrometers to meticulously trackโ bothโข temperature andโ humidity levels within the animal habitats.
For particularlyโ sensitiveโ species,โ a carefully orchestrated rotation system is in place. “Forโฃ some animals, it’s imperative โฃthey move in and out of indoor, climate-controlled roomsโ daily,” โKaneko details. “Every earlyโ morning, โwe let โthem outโฃ briefly, clean the area immediately afterward, and bring them โback inside. These are some โคof the measuresโค we take to โขmanage their comfortโข and hygiene.”[Image โฃof a statue ofโ a gorilla at Ueno Zoo โคbarricaded to prevent visitors from touching it due to high temperatures.
