Thousands Rally Across Bay Area โProtesting Trump Administration, Supporting Proposition 50
OAKLAND, CA – October 18, 2025 – Thousands of demonstrators took โคto theโ streets across theโ Bay area on Saturday, voicing opposition to the Trump administration and rallying in support of Proposition 50, a ballot measure concerning California’sโ congressional redistricting process. Rallies โคin Oakland, Sanโค Jose, Walnut Creek, and San Francisco โdrew large crowds,โค with organizers estimating 10,000 participants at the Oakland event alone.
The protests, dubbed “No Kings” rallies, reflected widespread concerns about theโข direction of American democracyโข under the current โฃadministration. demonstrators expressed fears of โคeroding checks and balances and a potential slide towards authoritarianism.
In San โFrancisco, โฃactivists created a “human banner” at Oceanโค Beach displaying the โslogans “no โคKings” andโ “Yes onโฃ 50,” referencing the November 4th election where โvoters willโ decide on the โฃDemocrats’ โplan to redraw congressional districts in โขresponseโฃ to redistricting tactics employed by Texas Republicans.
The Walnut โCreek demonstration sawโ hundreds gather near the downtown shopping center shortly before the scheduled start time. Pay Saye, aโ 78-year-old โฃConcord resident, โขattended her first-ever protest, stating, “I’ve โnever felt more afraid of losing the America โฃI grew up inโฆTrump is ruining everything we believe in-America and โhow it started.”
Oakland’s rally at Lake Merritt began with several hundred attendees and swelled โas thousands marched from Wilma Chan Park.Oakland โคschool board Vice President โคValarie Bachelor, emceeing the event, estimated the crowd size at 10,000. Mayor Barbaraโค Lee addressed the crowd, framing herโ speech โaround patriotism and the protection of civil liberties. โข”We cannot let them shrink democracy while they shout freedom,” Lee said. “we cannot let them crown aโข king while they wave our flag.”
Demonstrators carried signs addressing โฃa range ofโข issues beyond the presidential administration, including union support and housing affordability. Jinsu โElhance, 26, urged fellow protesters โคto envision a future beyond the current administration, stating, “There’s so much more going on in the world than just this โฃpresidentโฆThis moment is incredibly crucial, but if we can’t use our โcreativity to picture what it is indeed thatโฃ we are moving toward, โขthen we are โคgoing to trip over ourselves in theโข process.”
Republican responseโค to the protests appearedโข muted. While the rallies drew important crowds, counter-protests wereโ minimal. A spokesperson for California GOP Chair Corrin Rankin did not respond to a โฃrequest for comment regardingโ Democrats’ portrayal of Trump as authoritarian, andโ calls to Republican officials in Santa Clara,โฃ Contra Costa, and Alameda counties went unanswered.
The protests come asโค Washington, D.C. grapples with efforts to prolong the ongoing partial federal governmentโฃ shutdown.
