Jakarta -โฃ Sales โof plug-in โhybridโ electricโ vehicles (PHEVs)โค are rapidly gaining traction in indonesia,โ with Chinese brands leading the charge. Through Octoberโข 2025, a total of 3,798โฃ PHEV units were sold nationwide, โคa meaningful โportionโ driven by โtheโ popularityโข of vehicles from Chery.
Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo)โค reveals chery dominates the PHEV market, accounting โforโ 2,929 โunits sold thisโ year, spearheaded by the Tiggo 8 CSH model with 2,710 units.Jaecoo, โalso part of โขthe โChery Group, holds the second position with 704 units, โฃwhile โขMazda rounds out the top โthree with 59 units of its CX-80. Despite โฃthis surge โขand its positionโฃ as a major PHEV player globally, Chinese automotive giant BYD has yet to enter โthe Indonesian PHEV segment.
BYD โIndonesia’s Head of PR & Government, โLuther Panjaitan,โข indicated the companyโ is considering introducing PHEVs to the indonesianโ market. “It is very possible for us to bring it to Indonesia,” Panjaitan stated at ICE BSD City, Tangerang, adding that BYD’s PHEV and EV โขlineups are currently theโ mostโฃ complete in every segment.
Though, BYDโข is awaiting clearer regulations differentiating โขPHEVs fromโ regular hybrids. โ”We are currentlyโ waitingโข for more โคfirm regulations โฃagainst PHEVs. Because this should look โmore differentโ between a plug-in hybridโ and a โฃregular hybrid,” Panjaitan explained. “It is indeedโฃ very possible that we will bring itโ in next year toโฃ complete our lineups. It is indeed also a solution for certain areas that mayโข still โexperienceโ problems โinโข terms of infrastructure.”
Overall electrified vehicle sales – encompassingโค hybrid, battery electric vehicles (BEV), and PHEV – reached 124,510โข units in Indonesia from January to October โค2025.
