TOLEDO,SPAIN – November 26,2023 – Teh University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) ombudsmans office has reported a persistent influx of student complaints regarding unfilled medical school places,a trend spanning multiple academic years. The issue, highlighted in a recently published report covering data up to 2024, underscores the competitive nature of medical school admissions and the challenges in fully utilizing allocated spots.
The medical degree at UCLM consistently demonstrates the highest cut-off scores within the university, with approximately 14 applicants competing for each available place. This intense competition frequently leads to petitions to the Ombudsman, particularly concerning vacant positions. The report, authored by Ombudsman รgata Marรญa Sanz Hermida, details ongoing concerns about these unfilled places, citing a violation of Article 7.2 of Royal Decree 412/2014, which addresses the obligation to fill allocated university places.
While late cancellations contribute to some vacancies, Sanz Hermida emphasizes that UCLM, along with other Spanish universities, is actively working to ensure full enrollment. The report also calls for improved national coordination to address the issue more effectively. The UCLM’s medical program is offered across multiple campuses, including Toledo, Albacete, and Ciudad Real. The specific number of vacant places varies annually, but the ombudsman’s office notes the problem is recurring.
