From Basement to Breakthrough: Ranking MLB Teams Poised for 2026 Contention

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – While ‍the 2024 MLB season unfolds with established contenders battling for playoff spots, a dozen franchises currently languishing ⁢near the⁤ bottom of the standings are quietly laying the groundwork for‍ future success.⁣ Identifying which‍ of ⁤these struggling teams possesses the best chance of rapidly⁢ ascending into contention by 2026 requires a careful assessment⁣ of farm system strength, financial adaptability, and strategic decision-making. This ranking evaluates those factors, projecting the likelihood of each institution transforming from rebuilding ⁣project‌ to legitimate playoff⁣ threat within⁣ the next two seasons.

The gap between consistent winners and perennial losers is widening in Major⁤ League Baseball, fueled by competitive balance tax thresholds and the increasing importance of data-driven player development. For fans of teams currently experiencing⁣ hardship, hope hinges on a confluence of factors: graduating⁢ top prospects, ⁢shrewd free agent acquisitions, and a willingness to embrace modern baseball strategies. ⁣Here’s a look ⁢at 12 ⁤teams currently outside the playoff picture, ranked by their⁤ potential to compete in ‌2026:

1. Baltimore Orioles: ‍ Already⁤ showing signs of life, the Orioles boast ⁣a rapidly ascending‌ farm system consistently ranked among ⁣the league’s best. Key young ‍players like Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson are foundational pieces, and continued development alongside strategic additions should make Baltimore a consistent contender.

2. Arizona ⁤Diamondbacks: Despite⁢ a⁤ surprising 2023 playoff run, Arizona remains relatively young and possesses a strong core.⁣ Continued investment⁢ in pitching development and targeted ⁤free agent signings will be crucial to sustaining success.

3.⁢ Kansas ‍City royals: The royals’ rebuild is gaining momentum, fueled by a promising influx of ⁤young talent. ⁤bobby Witt Jr. is ⁣a legitimate ⁣superstar, and the organization’s commitment to improving its pitching staff offers a clear path toward competitiveness.

4.⁢ Oakland athletics: While facing relocation uncertainty, the‍ A’s have quietly assembled ‌a‌ collection of intriguing prospects. If they can retain key pieces and navigate the challenges of a new market, they could surprise in the‌ coming years.

5. Cincinnati Reds: The Reds’ ⁢farm system has produced several impact players, and their aggressive approach to player development is paying dividends. Continued growth from their ⁤young core, coupled with smart acquisitions,⁢ could propel⁤ them into contention.

6. ‍Colorado Rockies: A ⁤significant ⁣overhaul is ⁣underway in ⁤Colorado, with a focus on rebuilding the farm system and improving player development. While the road ahead is long, the‍ Rockies ⁤have the potential ⁤to become a competitive force in the National ⁤League.

7.‌ Washington Nationals: Similar to the Orioles, the Nationals are banking on a strong farm system ⁢to lead ⁢their resurgence. Young players like CJ Abrams and Keibert Ruiz ⁤provide a foundation, and continued ⁤development ⁣will be key.

8. Pittsburgh⁤ Pirates: The Pirates have shown⁢ flashes of potential, but consistency ⁣remains an issue. Continued development of their⁤ young pitching staff⁤ and strategic additions to the lineup will be essential for sustained success.

9. chicago White Sox: entering a full rebuild, the White Sox possess some intriguing prospects and financial flexibility. Though, they face a significant challenge in navigating a competitive American League.

10. St. Louis Cardinals: A ⁢traditionally‌ strong organization, the Cardinals are undergoing a period of transition. Their⁣ ability to⁤ replenish their⁢ farm system and identify impact players will ⁤determine ⁢their‌ trajectory.

11. new York Mets: Despite significant spending, the Mets‌ have underperformed in recent seasons. A accomplished rebuild will require a‌ focus on player development⁤ and a more strategic approach to free agency.

12. ⁢Los Angeles Angels: Despite the presence of Mike Trout and Shohei ⁣Ohtani ‌(prior to his departure), the Angels have ‍consistently failed to contend. A complete overhaul‌ of the organization, from player development to ⁣scouting, is necesary to break the cycle of mediocrity.

Ohtani Illness: Dodgers Shift Star to Designated Hitter

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 4, 2025

Roberts Explains Last-Minute Change with Ohtani, Provides Update on ‌Smith

PITTSBURGH, PA – Los Angeles Dodgers manager dave Roberts clarified Wednesday evening’s unexpected lineup change involving Shohei Ohtani, explaining the superstar was scratched from his scheduled start due to illness adn instead served as the designated hitter in the team’s 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“He felt⁤ good enough to hit, but didn’t feel good enough to pitch because of the illness,” Roberts revealed after the game. Ohtani, recovering from a cold, was described ⁤as “not quite fit,” leading the team to prioritize his health.”We just felt it‍ wasn’t worth playing a game,” Roberts added.

Ohtani ‍is currently battling a “strong cough,” but Roberts⁢ assured reporters there’s no concern about a prolonged absence from the mound. He anticipates Ohtani will pitch again “someday at some point,” with the ‌next chance potentially coming during the team’s series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Dodgers also received positive news regarding All-Star catcher‍ Will smith, who exited Wednesday’s game after the second inning with a bruise to ‌his right hand. An MRI revealed no abnormalities, tho Smith remains questionable for‍ upcoming games.

“I think he’s a fighter, he wants to help us win,” Roberts said of Smith’s willingness to play ‍through discomfort. “so if he’s on the baseball field and that means he has to go back and‍ to line up to get to‍ second base to get into scoring position, than‍ he ⁢will do it.”

The Dodgers are currently navigating a⁣ challenging start to the season as they compete with the San diego Padres for the NL West⁣ crown. having lost four of⁤ their⁤ last five games, Los Angeles is looking to regain momentum and secure a playoff ⁢position.

Baseball’s⁢ Tightest Races: nine Key Questions as September Dawns

NEW YORK – With Labor Day passing, baseball’s playoff picture is coming into sharper focus, but crucial ⁤questions remain unanswered as teams battle for division titles, Wild Card spots,‌ and individual accolades. here are nine storylines dominating the conversation as September begins:

  1. Dodgers⁢ Dominance: ‌Can the Los Angeles Dodgers maintain their notable ‍form? Pitcher Bobby Miller‘s August performance⁤ -‌ 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA – has been pivotal, contributing to his ⁣9-2 record ‍and 3.06 ERA ⁢overall. He’s become‍ invaluable to the team’s success.
  1. Mets’⁤ Helsley Headache: The New York Mets are ‌struggling to integrate reliever⁣ Ryan Helsley, acquired from the Cardinals at the trade deadline. Helsley has‍ blown four ‍saves and posted a 10.38 ERA‌ in his first 11 games with the team. Manager Carlos mendoza acknowledged the issue, stating,”We’ve got to look back‌ and see what we’re missing here, because for⁣ teams to ⁤have agreeable at-bats like that, something’s going ⁣on here.”
  1. Cardinals’ Attendance Dip: A paid crowd⁤ of just 17,675 attended a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium, marking the ‌first time the ‌team has drawn ⁣fewer than 20,000 fans as 1997.
  1. No-Hitter Drought: Major League Baseball remains without ⁤a no-hitter ⁤this ‍season. The last one occurred in 2005, leaving fans wondering if this will⁤ be the year the streak ends.
  1. Guardians’ Power ⁤void: The Cleveland Guardians continue to lack a power hitter, with no player projected to ‌reach 40 home runs this season. Travis Hafner was the last Guardian to⁤ achieve that feat,in 2006.
  1. Yankees-Red Sox⁤ Rivalry Reduced: The New⁣ York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will play only ⁢three games against each other after June next season, a schedule decision drawing criticism from fans.
  1. Cherington’s⁤ Return to Fenway: Pittsburgh Pirates GM Ben Cherington returned to Fenway Park for the first time⁤ as his 2015 firing by the red Sox.‌ He served as a Red Sox executive from 1999-2015, including his ‌final four years as GM.
  1. Padres’ Laureano‌ Boost: ‍ The San Diego Padres’ acquisition of outfielder Ramon Laureano has proven impactful. ⁢He’s ‌hitting .316 with six ‌home runs, 20 RBI, and a .968 OPS since joining the team from Baltimore.
  1. Boyd’s Endurance⁤ Question: The Chicago Cubs are monitoring ‌starter Matthew Boyd, who has already thrown a team-leading 153 innings – the most by a Cub⁢ in ⁤a season since 2019. Boyd posted a 2.34 ERA in the first half, earning an All-Star ⁤berth, but⁢ his ERA ⁤has risen to 4.10 in the second half, raising concerns about fatigue after throwing just 51 innings last season and a combined 146 over the previous three years.

MLB Power Rankings: Brewers (finally) take the top spot; one word for every team’s trade deadline

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor August 5, 2025

MLB Power Rankings Update: Twins, Nationals, White Sox & Rockies continue Struggles – Deadline Decisions Analyzed

MINNEAPOLIS – August 1, 2024 – The MLB trade deadline has passed, and the fallout continues to reshape the league landscape. Several teams, already facing significant challenges, opted for strategic sell-offs, while others remained largely inactive. This update to the MLB Power Rankings focuses on four teams at the bottom of the standings – the Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, and Colorado Rockies – and analyzes their deadline approaches.

Minnesota Twins

Record: 44-67
Last Power Ranking: 28

Deadline in a word: Disappointing.

The Twins’ current record reflects a stark decline from the optimism of 2023, when thay secured their first playoff win since 2004, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in a Wild Card Series.that victory, held at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, ignited hopes for sustained success. Though, ownership, led by the Pohlads, appears to have prioritized fiscal restraint over building on that momentum.

Rather of investing in bolstering the roster, the twins have seen payroll decrease, and a potential sale of the team to a new ownership group – discussions reportedly involving considerable bids from the Wilf family (owners of the Minnesota Vikings) and other groups – has stalled. This inaction has left fans questioning the long-term vision for the franchise. The team’s failure to capitalize on a rare playoff appearance and subsequent roster adjustments have contributed to their current struggles.

Washington Nationals

Record: 42-70
Last Power Ranking: 29

deadline in a word: Pragmatic.Facing a significant rebuild, the Nationals executed a series of trades focused on acquiring future assets. General Manager Mike Rizzo and his team successfully moved players with expiring contracts and limited long-term roles within the institution.Key departures included starting pitcher michael Soroka, outfielder Alex Call, infielder amed Rosario, closer Kyle Finnegan, and relief pitchers Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia (traded to the Los Angeles Angels).

These moves, while not yielding blockbuster returns, maximized value for players who weren’t central to the Nationals’ long-term plans. The trades brought back a mix of prospects and cash considerations, providing the organization with flexibility as they continue to rebuild around young stars like CJ Abrams and Keibert Ruiz. The Nationals are currently playing their home games at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Chicago White Sox

Record: 30-82
Last Power Ranking: 30

Deadline in a word: Realistic.

The White Sox, mired in a deep rebuild, focused on extracting value from their remaining assets. While star outfielder Luis Robert’s recent hot streak didn’t significantly inflate his trade value, the team successfully capitalized on the strong performance of veteran pitcher Adrian Houser, sending him to a contending team. Other moves included trading Austin Slater to the New York Yankees for 22-year-old pitcher Jake Ziehl and Tristan Gray to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash.

The White Sox have already traded away several key pieces, including pitcher Garrett Crochet. Robert remains a potential trade chip this winter, but the team’s current focus is on accumulating prospects and building a foundation for future success. The team plays its home games at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Colorado Rockies

Record: 30-82
Last Power Ranking: 30

Deadline in a word: Finally.

The Rockies, long criticized for their reluctance to fully embrace a rebuild, finally began to dismantle their roster. They traded away several relievers with remaining value and, surprisingly, dealt Ryan McMahon, a veteran infielder and one of the team’s most recognizable faces.

This move signals a clear shift in direction for the Rockies, who have struggled with consistent losing seasons. McMahon, now with a new team, has the potential to thrive in an organization that prioritizes modern baseball analytics and scouting. The Rockies’ decision to trade McMahon, along with other moves, represents a significant step towards a full-scale rebuild. Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, remains the Rockies’ home ballpark.

MLB trade deadline Urgency Index 3.0: Who needs what? Who needs it the most?

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 28, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Phillies Bolster Bullpen with Robertson Acquisition, But More Help May Be Needed

Philadelphia, PA – The Phillies have added a significant arm to their bullpen with the signing of David Robertson to a two-month, $6 million deal. Though, this move may only be the beginning of their pursuit for relief help, as the team’s bullpen continues to struggle.

The Phillies’ bullpen currently ranks 22nd in ERA (4.27) and 25th in WPA (0.4). No other contending team is performing as poorly in both categories. Given President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski’s history of making impactful bullpen upgrades at the trade deadline,Robertson’s arrival could signal further moves to strengthen the relief corps.

Tigers’ Bullpen Woes Continue, Seeking Late-Inning Firepower

Detroit, MI – The Detroit Tigers‘ bullpen has seen a steady decline in performance throughout the season. Their ERA has climbed from 2.90 in April to 3.87 in May, 4.44 in june, and a concerning 6.10 in July. A particular weakness for the Tigers heading into the playoffs is their lack of late-inning arms with high strikeout potential, as evidenced by their AL-low strikeout rate.

The Tigers may look to acquire a high-end,team-controlled reliever to build their bullpen for the future. However, this pursuit is intricate by the fact that several top relief prospects are with division rivals Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians.

Dodgers Eye october Impact with Bullpen Reinforcements

Los Angeles, CA – Despite recent losses, the Los Angeles Dodgers are assured of a playoff spot and are strategically seeking bullpen help with an eye toward October success, rather than just regular-season depth. With ample financial resources and prospect capital, the dodgers are expected to target prominent relief pitchers.

Even with the potential return of injured relievers Tanner Scott, Blake Treinen, and Michael Kopech for the playoffs, the Dodgers’ decision to pursue additional high-end relief help is a prudent one. this proactive approach is crucial given the strength of their overall roster and the risk of late-inning struggles derailing their title defense.

Rays Seek Bullpen resurgence after Decade of Dominance

St.Petersburg, FL – The Tampa Bay Rays, historically known for their strong bullpens, are experiencing a diffrent reality this season. While their relievers’ 3.93 ERA ranks in the middle of the pack, it represents their highest team ERA since 2016.Furthermore, their -1.8 WPA, placing them 27th in MLB, is their worst mark since 2007.

The Rays are likely to target an under-the-radar reliever with the aim of developing them into a reliable high-leverage option. However, the innovative Rays front office could also make a significant splash by pursuing one of the most sought-after names on the reliever market.

Honorable Mentions:

Toronto Blue Jays
Seattle Mariners
* New York Mets
