Which NHL teams need to upgrade at center? Ranking all 32 by current quality

NHL Teams Evaluate Center Depth Before Free Agency

Assessing Each Team’s Strengths and Needs Down the Middle

As the offseason arrives, NHL teams are evaluating their rosters. Central to any team’s success is its depth at center, a position that shapes both offense and defense. This analysis provides a pre-free agency look at each team’s center position, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

Oilers and Golden Knights Lead the Pack

The **Edmonton Oilers**, with **Connor McDavid** and **Leon Draisaitl**, unsurprisingly top the rankings. Their need is simply a bottom-six center, making them the clear front-runner. Close behind are the **Vegas Golden Knights**, boasting a strong core of centers: **Jack Eichel**, **Tomas Hertl**, **William Karlsson**, and **Nicolas Roy**.

The **New Jersey Devils** come in third, their 1-2 punch of **Jack Hughes** and **Nico Hischier** driving their success, though their depth at 3C could be improved. The **Colorado Avalanche** benefit from **Nathan MacKinnon’s** presence, while the **Dallas Stars** are set after **Matt Duchene’s** contract extension.

Mid-Tier Teams and Their Challenges

The **Tampa Bay Lightning** require a steady 4C. The **New York Islanders** are in decent shape, especially with **Bo Horvat** and **Mathew Barzal** centering their top lines. The **Florida Panthers** have options, including the possibility of **Sam Bennett** returning. For the **Los Angeles Kings**, the focus is on the ongoing development of **Quinton Byfield** to complement **Anze Kopitar**.

The **Buffalo Sabres** look set, assuming **Tage Thompson** plays center. The **Ottawa Senators** have a promising top three led by **Tim Stützle**, but need a solid fourth-liner. The **Carolina Hurricanes**, hampered by **Jesperi Kotkaniemi**, need an upgrade to their top-six center.

The **Toronto Maple Leafs** require upgrades, especially without **John Tavares**, and lack depth. The **Detroit Red Wings** hope **Marco Kasper** continues developing to aid **Dylan Larkin**.

Teams Facing Significant Gaps

The **Washington Capitals** need a consistent performance from **Pierre-Luc Dubois**. The **Pittsburgh Penguins**, with an aging **Evgeni Malkin**, face problems. The **Minnesota Wild** might trade a 2C. The **Winnipeg Jets** have long-standing needs.

The **St. Louis Blues** require a middle-six center. The **New York Rangers’** center depth is bleak if **Mika Zibanejad** departs. The **Columbus Blue Jackets** hope for progress from young players. The **Calgary Flames** need a top-line center.

Rebuilding Teams and Their Priorities

The **Utah Mammoth** need to add high-end talent. The **Montreal Canadiens** are set at the top with **Nick Suzuki**, but have other issues. The **San Jose Sharks** need growth from their young stars. The **Chicago Blackhawks** need to see progress in their development.

The **Vancouver Canucks** are reeling from the departure of key players, and their depth has diminished. The **Seattle Kraken** are struggling with their current center lineup. The **Anaheim Ducks** need **Leo Carlsson** and **Mason McTavish** to develop, and the **Boston Bruins** need a replacement for **Patrice Bergeron** and more centers.

The **Philadelphia Flyers** desperately need a top offensive star at center. The **Nashville Predators** need to find answers. According to NHL.com, the average salary for an NHL center is $5.2 million, a key factor in team strategy and free agency considerations (NHL).

Free Agent Focus: Pittsburgh Penguins

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor June 16, 2025

Penguins Face Free Agency Crossroads

Navigating the RFA Landscape

As free agency approaches in July, the Pittsburgh Penguins have crucial decisions ahead. They must weigh re-signing restricted free agents (RFAs) and assess the market for unrestricted free agents (UFAs). The team’s strategy will significantly influence their competitiveness in the upcoming season.

Restricted Free Agents in Focus

Forward Connor Dewar, acquired at the trade deadline, experienced a positive shift, accumulating seven points in 17 games. Yet, his season total of 10 points in 48 outings presents a challenge. His contract structure allows for a lower qualifying offer of $819K, but arbitration rights complicate matters. The Penguins might seek a deal similar to his previous salary, but a qualifying offer could be avoided to sidestep arbitration.

Connor Dewar, acquired at the trade deadline.

Defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph, previously non-tendered to avoid arbitration, returned to Pittsburgh mid-season after struggling in St. Louis. He played as a depth piece. Like Dewar, he’s arbitration-eligible, making him a potential non-tender candidate. A qualifying offer of $997.5K is due.

Defenseman Conor Timmins, also acquired from Toronto, showed increased impact with seven points in 17 games. Timmins is arbitration-eligible as well, and the risk of a qualifying offer is lower. A one-year deal might boost his salary to approximately $1.75MM. General Manager Kyle Dubas might prefer a two-year contract, with an offer around $2MM.

Forward Philip Tomasino, acquired from Nashville, became a regular with the Penguins, scoring 11 goals and 12 assists in 50 games. His qualifying offer is just over $866K, and he is also arbitration-eligible. A one-year deal could make sense, with a price tag around $1.5MM. A two-year contract would push the AAV closer to $2MM.

Other RFAs include Raivis Ansons, Emil Bemstrom, Taylor Gauthier, Filip Lindberg, and Vasiliy Ponomarev.

Unrestricted Free Agent Overview

Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who took a one-year deal with Pittsburgh, saw his value rise, achieving career highs in assists (39) and points (40). His performance has made him the top point-getter among UFA blueliners. Despite being a smaller defenseman, Grzelcyk could exceed his previous salary of $2.75MM and secure a multi-year deal.

Free Agent Focus: Pittsburgh Penguins
Matt Grzelcyk, UFA defenseman.

Joona Koppanen is one of the few UFAs to play at least 10 NHL games this season. He has the size that some teams may covet for a depth spot in the lineup. The 27-year-old may find suitors. A two-way pact on the open market is likely.

Matthew Nieto has played in only 54 games in two seasons due to injuries, managing just seven points. He might struggle to get a guaranteed deal. He may be a training camp PTO candidate.

Other UFAs include Nathan Clurman, Mac Hollowell, Filip King, Jimmy Huntington, Marc Johnstone, Mathias Laferriere, and Colton Poolman.

Cap Space and Strategy

The Penguins have substantial cap flexibility with over $23MM in room. However, with Dan Muse’s hiring as head coach signaling a potential rebuild, they may not be overly active in free agency. They are unlikely to approach the $95.5MM Upper Limit at the start of the 2025-26 season.

The current NHL salary cap is $88 million for the 2024-25 season, according to NHL.com. This figure underscores the importance of strategic cap management for teams like the Penguins.

As NHL free agency approaches, teams are eyeing potential acquisitions to strengthen their lineups. With prominent names like Mitch marner, Aaron Ekblad, and Nikolaj Ehlers headlining the list of pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs), the upcoming weeks promise meaningful roster moves. This article, inspired by insights from The Athletic, highlights one UFA each team should target this summer to address their specific needs and elevate their competitiveness in the league. The focus is on strategic acquisitions that align with team goals and improve overall performance.

Anaheim ducks

Brock Boeser

If Marner isn’t in play, Boeser could be a good Plan B who isn’t nearly as costly. He’ll get paid and could surpass Troy Terry’s team-high $7 million AAV. But the Ducks’ salary scale wouldn’t be thrown off, and they would get a shooter whose down year of 25 goals last season would have led Anaheim. Beckett Sennecke, the no. 3 pick in 2024, won’t need to be rushed.- Eric Stephens

Boston Bruins

Mitch Marner

Who would want to play against a team that rolls David Pastrnak on one shift and Marner the next? The Bruins would be top-heavy with two difference-making right wings. But in a good way. – Fluto Shinzawa

Buffalo Sabres

Aaron Ekblad

The Sabres’ biggest need is a right-shot defenseman capable of playing in the top four. Ekblad is the best player available who fits that description. He comes with an established track record playing for a winning team to go with a physical edge. He’s also only 29,so he should still have some good seasons left in him. – Matthew Fairburn

calgary Flames

Nikolaj Ehlers

A goal-scoring winger with speed and skating in his arsenal. He makes a ton of sense for Calgary if he’s willing to remain in Canada.Boeser could be another option. The goal is for Calgary to get someone younger and not chase after mid-30s players who keep them away from that goal. – Julian McKenzie

Mitch marner is a defensively responsible forward who is hardworking and can be used in all situations. (Minas Panagiotakis / Getty Images)

Carolina Hurricanes

Mitch Marner

Marner would fit the Hurricanes’ style and give the team an elite point producer. he’s a defensively responsible forward who is hardworking and can be used in all situations. While there is a case for Carolina upgrading at center over another wing, the team could accomplish its longtime pursuit of landing a superstar by landing Marner this offseason. – Cory Lavalette

Chicago Blackhawks

Mitch Marner

Marner is probably a long shot, and the blackhawks may not even sign a significant unrestricted free agent. It’s possible they’ll be more aggressive in trying to acquire someone through trade. But of the current UFAs, Marner is the one who makes the most sense from age and talent standpoints.- Scott powers

Colorado Avalanche

Dante Fabbro

After signing Brock Nelson to an extension, Colorado has its core under contract, but also very little cap space to work with. the Avs should be looking to upgrade the fringes with a good value signing, and Fabbro could be perfect. He’s 26, a strong skater and played well with Norris Trophy finalist Zach Werenski this year. He’d be a great addition if Colorado could find a way to fit his contract. – Jesse Granger

Columbus Blue Jackets

Aaron Ekblad

the Blue Jackets want to bolster their blue line, and the right side needs the most help. Ekblad would be a perfect fit, whether he pairs with Werenski on the top pair or with youngster Denton Mateychuk on the second pair. The right side has been a sore spot as Seth Jones was traded to Chicago, but Ekblad could help give the Jackets two major minute-munchers, one on each side. – Aaron Portzline

Dallas Stars

Aaron ekblad

Miro Heiskanen is capable of playing on his off side; he’s been doing it for years. But the Stars could use a good right-handed shot, and Ekblad fits the bill. He could slot in alongside Thomas Harley or Esa Lindell and give Dallas a terrific top four. But making the money work will be difficult, especially if Jim Nill plans to re-sign Matt Duchene and captain Jamie Benn. – Mark Lazerus

NHL Free Agency 2025: Top Targets for Every Team

Vladislav Gavrikov is one of the league’s best defensive defensemen. (Luke Hales / Getty Images)

Detroit Red Wings

Vladislav Gavrikov

While a top-line winger would be the more exciting add, Detroit needs a top-four defenseman, and Gavrikov would be the dream fit. He’s one of the league’s best defensive defensemen, is used to taking tough minutes and has familiarity with Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney from Los Angeles. Putting Gavrikov next to Moritz Seider would make for a fearsome defensive pairing. – Max Bultman

Edmonton Oilers

Connor Brown

It’s a boring answer, but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with boring. Brown has become one of the heartbeats of the team as a penalty killer and role player who can move up in the lineup. He loves being an Oiler, his former agent runs the team and he surely won’t break the bank. That’s vital, considering the oilers don’t have an abundance of cap space. – Daniel Nugent-Bowman

Florida Panthers

Sam Bennett

Why mess with success? That goes for both sides, too. If Bennett wants to max out – and some team will be more than happy to offer the prospect – it’ll be time to say goodbye. Is it that outrageous to think that Florida paying him, say, $7 million a season should be out of the question? The fit is perfect, and there (as usual) aren’t a ton of plug-and-play down-the-middle options on the market. – Sean Gentille

Los Angeles Kings

Vladislav Gavrikov

With Rob Blake as the kings’ GM, it felt like a foregone conclusion that Gavrikov would be re-signed, but that’s no longer the case with ken Holland. If Holland isn’t keen on throwing many years and big money at Gavrikov, the 29-year-old defensive bedrock, trading for the younger Bowen Byram (or perhaps Nicolas Hague) might be necessary if they also make a big move, such as taking a run at Marner. – Eric Stephens

Minnesota Wild

John Tavares

The Wild’s main need is up the middle, and now they’re on Plan B after target Nelson re-signed with the Avalanche. Tavares’ priority has been to stay in Toronto, but if he gets to market, he’d give Minnesota the experienced, two-way center who could take some pressure off Joel Eriksson Ek. The Wild need to get Tavares, duchene or Jonathan Toews to address the position, especially after missing out on Nelson. – Joe Smith

Dante Fabbro is young, shoots from the right side, should be relatively inexpensive and did some good things with the Blue Jackets. (Jason Mowry / Getty Images)

Montreal Canadiens

Dante Fabbro

Fabbro might not make it to July 1, as the reasons why Montreal might want him are the same reasons Columbus would want to keep him: he’s young, shoots from the right side, should be relatively inexpensive and did some good things with the Blue Jackets. The Canadiens have a need on the right side of their blue line with the retirement of David Savard. – Arpon Basu

Nashville Predators

Sam Bennett

It’s doubtful Bennett will be available, but if he is, the Predators should be all over him. He’s a proven playoff performer who plays with an edge and can score. He’s also a good fit with the team’s identity. – Pierre LeBrun

New Jersey Devils

Tyler Bertuzzi

The Devils need to add some grit and toughness to their lineup, and Bertuzzi would bring that in spades. He’s also a skilled player who can score goals and make plays. He’s a good fit with the team’s style of play. – Pierre LeBrun

New York Islanders

Jonathan Drouin

The Islanders need to add some skill and creativity to their lineup, and Drouin would bring that in spades. He’s also a good fit with the team’s style of play. – Pierre LeBrun

New York Rangers

Jake Guentzel

The Rangers need to add some scoring depth to their lineup, and Guentzel would bring that in spades. He’s also a proven playoff performer who can score goals and make plays. He’s a good fit with the team’s style of play. – Pierre LeBrun

Ottawa Senators

Matt Duchene

The Senators need to add some experience and leadership to their lineup, and Duchene would bring that in spades. He’s also a skilled player who can score goals and make plays. He’s a good fit with the team’s style of play. – Pierre LeBrun

Philadelphia Flyers

Chris Tanev

The Flyers need to add some defensive stability to their lineup, and tanev would bring that in spades. He’s also a good fit with the team’s style of play. – pierre LeBrun

Pittsburgh Penguins

Jason Zucker

The Penguins need to add some scoring depth to their lineup, and Zucker would bring that in spades. He’s also a good fit with the team’s style of play. – Pierre LeBrun

San Jose Sharks

Joe Pavelski

Idiot Steals Puck From Boy, Sparking Outrage Among Penguins Fans

A Puck, a Scuffle, and ⁣a Heroic Gesture: The Unforgettable Drama at PPG⁢ Paints Arena

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 5-2 ⁣loss to‍ the Tampa Bay⁢ Lightning on Sunday evening was overshadowed by an unexpected and dramatic fan incident that left the crowd at PPG‌ Paints Arena buzzing. ‌While the game itself was intense, the real story‍ unfolded in⁣ the stands, where a ⁣young fan’s quest for a souvenir puck turned into‌ a full-blown spectacle.

The Puck Heist That Sparked a Chant

During ⁣the ‍second period, a puck became lodged in the ‌netting in the left-wing⁣ corner of the Penguins’ zone.⁣ A young teenage ⁢boy,‌ eager ⁢to claim a piece of the game, managed to free the puck. But⁤ before he⁤ could celebrate, ‍an ‌older fan swooped⁢ in and snatched it, handing⁤ it to his adult granddaughter. ⁤

Witnesses, including ⁣arena employees who asked to ‍remain anonymous, confirmed the incident. “The older fan ⁣took the puck from the boy and‌ gave it ⁤to ⁣his granddaughter,” said one usher, referred to ‍as Usher No. 1.

The crowd quickly caught on, and ‌what‌ followed was a ⁤wave of collective outrage. Hundreds, then thousands, of fans began chanting,⁣ “Give him‌ the puck!” The older fan, described as wearing an ill-fitting baseball cap, remained unmoved, refusing to relinquish the⁤ puck⁤ despite⁢ the growing chorus of disapproval. ⁤

A Hero ⁣Emerges ‌⁤

As the chants grew ⁢louder, the Penguins’ families, seated nearby, took notice. One player’s wife, whose identity remains undisclosed, decided to step in. She informed Usher No. 2 that she had ⁣a⁤ game puck in the family room downstairs and wanted to give it⁣ to the‌ boy.

the usher escorted her to retrieve the puck, and upon ⁢her ‌return, she presented it to the young fan. The crowd erupted ⁣in cheers as⁣ the boy raised his‍ arms in triumph, puck⁢ in hand.

“It’s too bad we can’t name the player’s wife because⁣ she’s a bit of a hero in all of⁢ this,” the article noted. “She‌ did a marvelous thing.”

The Fallout

Unluckily, the story didn’t end there. The older fan, seemingly incensed‌ by the crowd’s⁢ reaction, confronted⁤ the ⁤boy’s mother. Usher No.⁤ 2 described the man as “irate.”

The drama ⁣escalated further when the man confronted Usher No. 1, even grabbing the usher by the arm. Pittsburgh Police were waiting at the top of‌ the‍ section and ⁣escorted the man away⁢ after he reportedly ⁣berated them ⁤as well.

A Tale of Two Fans

The ⁤incident ⁤highlighted ⁣the stark contrast between the older fan’s selfishness and the player’s⁤ wife’s generosity. While one chose to take from a child, the other chose to give, ‍restoring a sense of justice and goodwill to the arena.

Slafkovsky Needs to Learn: St. Louis Coach on Young Forward

Canadiens Coach Defends Young Star Slafkovský Amidst ‌Early⁣ Season ⁢Struggles

Montreal Canadiens head‌ coach Martin⁢ St.Louis recently addressed the media following a team practice, offering his perspective on the performance of young Slovak forward Juraj Slafkovský. While some ‌have criticized Slafkovský’s early season showing,St.Louis highlighted the 20-year-old’s positive attributes and unwavering work⁤ ethic.

Despite facing⁣ scrutiny, Slafkovský’s youth is ‌a factor St. Louis emphasizes. “He knows he’s young. He has things to learn. He⁢ doesn’t think he has ⁣all the answers and he’s not⁢ going to blame everything around him‌ if⁢ it doesn’t work,‍ so that’s a good quality to have,” St.Louis commented. This mature approach, according to the coach, ‌is a key strength ⁢for the‍ young player navigating the intense pressures of the NHL.

St. Louis also ⁣praised Slafkovský’s ability to maintain perspective amidst the high-stakes habitat‌ of⁤ professional hockey. ⁤ “We play a serious game in a serious league, but I‌ don’t think Slafkovský‍ takes himself so seriously. Sometimes he laughs at himself, which is the part I⁤ like about him,” st. Louis⁤ stated, emphasizing the importance‌ of ⁢a healthy‍ self-awareness and a sense of humor in the face of adversity. ⁢ This ‌resilience, a quality often seen in successful athletes, suggests‍ a luminous future for the young Slovak player.

Slafkovský’s ⁢journey reflects the challenges many young players face entering the ⁤NHL. ‍ His performance, while perhaps ⁣not meeting initial expectations, showcases‌ the learning curve inherent in⁢ transitioning to professional hockey.‌ ‌ St. Louis’s comments underscore ‌the importance of⁢ patience and⁣ support in developing young ‌talent ⁢within⁢ the league, a sentiment echoed by many coaches across the‍ NHL.

The Canadiens organization, known ⁣for its history of developing young players, appears committed to Slafkovský’s growth. ⁣ His positive attitude and willingness to learn, as highlighted by St. Louis, suggest a promising trajectory for the young forward, despite the early season challenges.

What I’m hearing on the Penguins: Ryan Graves benched, Jim Rutherford’s return and more

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Penguins Ponder Future as Graves Struggles

The Pittsburgh Penguins face a dilemma regarding defenseman Ryan Graves. While he has shown slight improvement this season, his performance still falls short of expectations, leading to his benching for the fourth consecutive game. The team’s recent success without him raises tough questions about his future in Pittsburgh.

"We’ve been patient, we’ve been hard on him when necessary, and we’ve given him a pat on the back when necessary," Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan stated. "To Graves’ credit, he’s actually been better this season, but it’s hardly been worthy of the salary we pay him."

Noting the strong correlation between Graves’ absence from the lineup and the team’s victories, some analysts suggest his presence might be detrimental to the team’s performance.

Statistical evidence supports this concern. Over the past two seasons, the Penguins boast a 10-4-4 record when Graves is scratched or injured, which translates to a impressive 113-point pace. Conversely, with Graves in the lineup, their record plummets to 38-40-12.

"We’re not thrilled with his performance," Sullivan admitted. "We see improvement in sheltered minutes but he’s still losing battles in front of the net, despite his size. Offensively, he hasn’t given us much either."

Graves’ lack of production is stark. In 20 games this season, he has yet to record a point. This follows a disappointing 70-game campaign last year where he managed only three goals and 14 points. This pales in comparison to his career highlights, where he exceeded 25 points three times and scored over eight goals twice – achievements that remain elusive in Pittsburgh.

Despite this, the Penguins aren’t giving up on Graves. They have no choice but to find a way to make him a valuable asset, considering he has four years remaining on his contract. However, his spot in the lineup is far from guaranteed.

Sullivan’s focus remains winning games, regardless of a player’s salary. "I’m in the business of winning games," he emphasized. "I’m not concerned about sitting a wealthy player if it’s what’s best for the team."

Rutherford Returns to Pittsburgh

An exciting reunion is on the horizon as former Penguins General Manager Jim Rutherford returns to Pittsburgh. While not for a Penguins game, Rutherford will be present for the induction of Matt Cullen into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

This marks Rutherford’s first return to PPG Paints Arena since his surprising resignation almost four years ago. He remains close friends with several key figures in the Penguins organization, including Sullivan and Captain Sidney Crosby, and also speaks highly of current Penguins president of hockey operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.

Rutherford has a habit of visiting Sullivan and Crosby during Vancouver road trips, but this will be his first return to Pittsburgh since his departure from the team.

Dubas Eyes the Future with Trades

Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas is actively exploring trade possibilities.

While Dubas is known for being in constant communication with other GMs, the Penguins aren’t actively shopping veterans like Marcus Pettersson, despite widespread speculation.

Instead, Dubas is focusing on acquiring young talent with prospects for growth. The recent acquisition of Phil Tomasino exemplifies this strategy.

Tomasino, known for his speed and potential, immediately impressed the Penguins with two goals and a leader in shots on goal in his first three games.

"We want to get faster. A lot faster," Dubas has stated repeatedly, recognizing the importance of speed in the modern NHL.

Tomasino is just the start. Dubas is actively scouring the league for young, speedy players who may not be thriving in their current situations but have the potential to blossom in Pittsburgh.

Malkin’s Adaptable Approach

The Penguins have strategically paired their top wingers, Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, with Sidney Crosby while deploying Evgeni Malkin alongside Tomasino and Drew O’Connor.

As a veteran with a tendency for playful improvisation on the ice, one might assume Malkin possesses a diva-like persona. However, Malkin has consistently been a team player, never voicing complaints about his linemates publicly or privately.

His quiet acceptance and willingness to play with whomever is assigned to him speaks volumes about his professionalism and dedication.
