Misiones Province Leads Argentina in Safe Battery Waste Management
POSADAS, Misiones – Misionesโ province is pioneering a extensive system for the collection,โฃ storage, and secure disposal of used batteries, positioning itself โฃas a national leader in hazardous waste management. The provincialโฃ strategy utilizes a municipal management scheme, establishing collectionโ points โคwithin local businesses. Collectedโ waste โis transported to primary storage centers, then to the Southern Environmental Center in fachinal for processing.
“We have โgreat traceability where the municipality also knows how many batteries are delivered โto the โขsystem,” stated provincial officialโข Chaon, adding that municipalities receive a certificate exonerating them from responsibility for hazardous waste โtreatment.
The system features a โrigorous classification process, with batteries undergoing treatment with absorbentโฃ materials to prevent leaks before โbeing stored in specialized deposits. Once a deposit reaches 20 tons, a “security filling” – a specially prepared and georeferenced siteโฃ – is opened for disposal. Misiones has already completed two such fillings, each containing over 20 tons ofโฃ batteries. Currently,โข the system holds a 4-ton stock undergoing classification, with another securityโข filling planned upon completion.
The initiative proactively addresses potentialโข future national legislation that โmay place responsibility โfor battery disposal on manufacturers or retailers. “We believe that at some point there will be some national law that puts responsibility for โthis elementโข in the manufacturer or merchant,” explained Chaon. “When thatโ time comes, thanks to organized work, Misiones knows howโ many batteries, what models โฃand โwhereโ they are saved.”โค
This sustained effort ensures the safe and controlled destination of aโ complex pollutant, solidifying Misiones’ position โคat the forefront of environmental management โfor household dangerous waste.
