Vatican returns 62 Artifacts to โคIndigenousโค Peoples in Canada
VATICAN CITYโ (AP) โ- The Vatican returned 62 cultural artifacts to Indigenous representatives from Canada on Saturday, marking a critically โimportant step toward reconciliation and addressing callsโ for the repatriation of โคsacred and culturally significant items.โ The artifacts, held inโฃ Vatican Museums collections, include ceremonial objects, textiles, and regalia.
The return fulfills a commitment madeโค earlierโ this โyear following โคPope Francis’sโ 2022 โvisit to โขCanada, where he apologized for the โขCatholic Church’s role in the country’s residentialโ school system.
“We need to rememberโค that thousands of Indigenous ancestors โคremain in the Vatican museums that need โขto be returned homeโ and โฃbroughtโข back into Indigenous care and โIndigenous hands,” said Shelagh Bell, of Metisโ ancestry and author of “Eternal Sovereigns: Indigenous Artists, Activists, and Travelers Reframing Rome.”
The Vatican statement affirmed the Canadian catholic hierarchy’s commitment โขto ensuring the artifacts โare “properly safeguarded, respected and preserved.”
The itemsโ will initially be transported โto the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, where experts and Indigenous groups willโข collaborate to determine thier origins – down to โthe specific community – and decide on their future disposition.
Bishop Pierre Goudreault, president of โคthe Canadian Conference of Catholicโฃ Bishops, stated the return represents “the church’s ongoing friendship with โIndigenous โฃand also our โdesire to support Indigenous communities โขin โaccompanying younger generationsโฃ in passing on and valuing their heritage.”
Canadianโ Ambassador to the Holy โคSee,Joyceโข Napier, describedโ the โrepatriationโ asโ “historic” and “somethingโ Indigenous communitiesโ have been asking for,” calling โitโค a “significant step towards โคreconciliation.”
The Vatican’s actionsโค are partโ of a broader process of reckoning with its โcolonialโ past, including the โข2023 repudiation of the “Doctrineโข of Discovery,” a set of 15th-century papal bulls that legitimized the colonial โฃseizure of Indigenous โlands. While the Vatican formally rejected the doctrine, it has not yet โคrescinded the bulls themselves.
The Vatican connected โคSaturday’s return to โthe 2023 repudiation, stating it concludes โthe “journey” of dialog initiated byโ Pope Francis.
