SEC and Círculo de Bellas Artes Explore Medicine and Beliefs
Madrid, Spain – A new roundtable series, “Medicine and Philosophy,” hosted by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) in collaboration with Madrid’s Círculo de Bellas Artes, successfully bridged the gap between medical, science, and humanities experts.
The series, which concluded in June, delved into three critical healthcare topics: “The Doctor-Patient Relationship in the Era of Artificial intelligence,” “Who Wants to Live Forever?”, and “Is Boredom a Medical Problem?” Recordings of the sessions are available online through the SEC’s channel.
The Hippocratic Chapter of the SEC, alongside organizers from the Círculo de Bellas Artes, curated the discussions. The first session focused on artificial intelligence in medicine, with panelists highlighting AI’s potential to streamline data interpretation and free up physician time for patient interaction.However, this efficiency also raised questions about increased patient loads. The importance of physician input in AI progress and the need to educate future clinicians on AI were also emphasized.
The second session explored the concept of longevity, blending biological insights with philosophical inquiries into the meaning of life. The final session addressed boredom, examining whether it constitutes a medical issue and the potential social and medical consequences of classifying normal emotional experiences as treatable conditions.
The success of the “Medicine and Philosophy” series, evidenced by sold-out sessions, has spurred organizers to consider future collaborations and potential expansion beyond Madrid.
