Arizona State University has been assessed a $50,000 fine by the big 12 Conference following a field-storming incident after their Saturday victory over Texas Tech, the conference announced Tuesday. The penalty underscores the Big 12’s commitment to safety protocols at athletic events and serves as a reminder to all member institutions regarding event management policies.
The fine stems from the celebratory rush onto the field at Mountain America Stadium instantly following the Sun Devils’ 26-22 upset win against the then-No. 7 ranked Red Raiders. The game concluded when ASU’s defense deflected a pass attempt by Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond in the end zone. The ensuing celebration saw fans dismantle the goalposts and flood the playing surface.
Big 12 Commissioner Brett yormark stated, “The Big 12 prioritizes the safety of all players, coaches and officials,” adding that the conference will “continue to work with all of its institutions on event management policies at all Big 12 venues.”
The victory marked quarterback Sam Leavitt’s return to the field after missing a game due to a lower leg injury. Both Leavitt and head coach kenny Dillingham joined the jubilant fans on the field, with Dillingham briefly pausing a postgame interview to participate in the celebration.
Arizona State (3-4) will remain at home this week to face Houston (6-1,3-1 Big 12) on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST.
