CDU โฃInternal โฃRevolt escalates with Call for Harder Line Against AfD, Potential Ban
Aโ growing faction within the Christian Democratic Union โ(CDU)โ is publicly challenging party leader โขFriedrich MerzS โapproach to the far-right โChoice โคfor Germany (AfD), demanding a complete โคadn unequivocal rejection of any cooperation and even advocating for aโ constitutional โban. The initiative, dubbedโ “Compass Mitte” (Center Compass), released a statement warningโ that the CDUโ was foundedโค on the understanding thatโ fascism gains โขpower with conservative assistance and thus “there must be โคno political cooperation betweenโ the โCDU and โthe right-wing extremist AfD.”
The push, reported by Zeit, โrepresents a notable โinternal rift within theโ CDU as it struggles to counter the AfD’s rising influence. Signatories argue the party’s current stance is insufficient and that an incompatibility decision with the AfD must apply “to all political levels,” โa departure from Merz’s previous suggestion that local-level cooperation with AfDโค votes โcould be permissible. This โinternal pressure โคcomes as the CDU seeks to regain groundโข after achieving only 28.6 percent in theโค last โfederal election.
“Compass Mitte” is also calling for the federal government, Bundestag, or Bundesrat to initiate proceedings with the Federal Constitutional Court to examine the AfD’s constitutionalityโ and potentially banโ the โparty. The initiativeโฃ draws support from liberal and social wings of the CDU, including Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter, โformer CDU general secretary Ruprecht Polenz, and Monica Wรผllner,โค deputyโ leader of theโ CDU’s employee wing.
The group โcontends that the CDU under Merz has โnarrowed its political spectrum, leading to lost โขsupport, and believes a more visible social and liberal stance is needed to attract a broader โขelectorate and return โคthe party to results of โคaroundโ 40 percent.Former CDU politician Peter Tauber warned, “Red and Green will not stop the afd.”
