Austria โคFocuses onโค Dignity and Support for Rising Dementia Cases
vienna, Austria – As World Alzheimer’s day is observed, Austria is reaffirming its commitment to improvingโ the lives of individuals living with dementia and their families. Thisโค year’s theme, “Dementia -โ Be and Stay,” underscores the importance of recognizing people with dementia as valued members โofโฃ society, not simply defined by โคtheirโข condition.
Health Minister Korinna Schumann emphasized the โขneed for โcollaborativeโค solutions,โ stating, “Itโ is crucial that we develop perspectives together inโ order to meet the needsโข of all โparticipants and enable a dignified life.”
The scale ofโ the challenge is significant. Globally,over 55 โmillion people currentlyโ live with dementia,a number that is rapidly increasing. In Austria,approximately 170,000 individuals are affected,with projections โestimating this number will exceed โ290,000โค by โ2050. Thisโ growth โขhighlights the increasing โhealth and social policy importanceโข of addressing dementia. Minister Schumann acknowledged the widespreadโข impact, noting, โ”Dementia affectsโค all โคof โฃus: in โคthe family, in the neighborhood and throughoutโ society.”
Austria has been actively working to improve dementia care since 2015 through its national dementiaโข strategy, “Life with Dementia.” This strategyโ provides a framework forโ collaboration โคbetween the federal government, regional authorities, socialโข security institutions, researchers,โข advocacy groups, and those directly affectedโ by dementia. Itโข outlines โขsevenโฃ action goals andโ 21 โrecommendations aimed at creating innovative and sustainable support systems.
A recently published โฃdementia report โฃforโฃ 2025 provides an overviewโ ofโฃ progress โandโ identifies areasโ needing further โขattention. theโข government currently โoffers a range of support services, including โคhome visits for individuals with dementia, financial assistance like care allowances, support programs for caregivers, and funding for training courses. โInformational brochures are also available for individuals with dementia, their families, and healthcare professionals.
