Jakarta, Indonesia – Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been named a suspect in a corruption case involving the digitizationโค of educationโ programs within the Ministry of Research and technology between โฃ2019 and 2022, theโ Attorney General’s Office (AGO) โannounced today.โฃ The case, which allegedly โคcaused stateโ losses of Rp 1.98โค trillionโ (approximately โฃ$125 million USD), has prompted lawyer Hotman โขParis Hutapea too seek assistance โfrom Prabowo Subianto, โaccording to reports.
Theโข investigation centers onโ alleged irregularities in the implementation โคof the education digitization programme. Nadiemโข Makarim is accused of violating Article 2 paragraph 1 โor Articleโ 3 โin conjunction with Article 18 โคof Lawโค number 31โข of 1999, as amended by Law Number โฃ20 โof 2001, concerning theโข Eradication โฃof Corruption Crimes, alongside Article 55 paragraph โ1 โof the Criminal Code. This advancement marks a significant escalation in a caseโ that has already seen multipleโฃ examinations โขofโ key figures.
The AGO has identified a totalโ of five suspects in connection with the alleged corruption.These include Sri Wahyuningsih, Directorโข of Elementary School at the Directorate Generalโ of Earlyโค Childhood Education,โ Basic Education and Secondary Education (2020-2021);โ Mulyatsyah, โคDirector of SMP at the Ministry ofโ Education and Culture (Kemendikbudristek) in 2020; Jurist Tan, a Special Staff to the โMinister of Education and Culture during Nadiem Makarim’s tenure as Minister โofโข Research and Technology; Ibrahim Arief, anโข individual consultant involved inโข the โฃdesign of โคschool resource โคmanagement technology infrastructure; and โNadiem Makarim himself.
Nadiem Makarim has already been questioned twice by investigators,โฃ on June 23rd โand July 15th,โ with each session lasting approximately 12 andโ 9 hours respectively. A third โฃexamination took place on September 4th. โ Moreover, authorities have imposed โaโฃ six-month travel ban on Nadiem Makarim, effective asโข June 19, โค2025, preventingโ himโฃ from leaving the โฃcountry.
