darwin Animal Shelter Faces Criticism Overโ Unfulfilled Desexing Services
Darwin animal welfare organization PAWS Darwin is under fire followingโฃ accusations of “irresponsible” and “veryโ disappointing” conduct after failing to provide paid-for desexing services to petโข owners. โThe RSPCA NT has publicly criticizedโ PAWS Darwin,โ alleging the organization continued to acceptโข animals despite โคfacing significant financialโ difficulties.
Charlesโ Giliam,โข operations manager for RSPCA โฃNT, stated PAWS’s actionsโข painted “the industry in a bad light” andโฃ thatโ the organization shouldโ have ceased operations once financial โissues arose. “I would haveโ expected them to do what โIโฃ believe โขwouldโค be the honourable thing and stop taking animals in,” Giliam โคsaid.
The controversy centers on petโค owners who paid for desexing procedures that were not carried โout by PAWS Darwin. Owners are now facingโค out-of-pocketโข expenses ranging from $300 to $900, depending on the animal’sโ sex and size, andโค the chosen veterinary clinic. โฃ
Steve Hoyneโ was one โขsuch owner, whose dog Rosie was ultimately desexed โฃthanks to financial assistance fromโ the Desexing Assistance Community Support group โฃin Darwin. Hoyne reported receiving no further communication โfrom PAWS darwin โfollowing the issue.
In a statement, PAWS Darwin said โคthey operated “at their own expense” and received “no government support,” โadding, “We believe deeply inโ theโฃ work weโ do.Even when โขoperating on the โskin of our โขteeth, we remain committed to honouringโค our promises and โdoing what’s right.”
