Supreme Court Sides wiht Trump Management, Reinstates Controversial Immigration Sweeps in Southern California
Washington D.C. – in a 6-3 decision, teh U.S. Supreme Court today lifted a temporary restraining order that blocked the Trump administration from conducting “roving patrols” and profiling individuals based on appearance in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California. The ruling effectively allows federal immigration officials to resume aggressive street sweeps that began earlier this June, sparking immediate condemnation from California officials and civil rights advocates.
The case centers on the legality of detaining and questioning individuals about their immigration status based on a “totality of circumstances,” a standard the court deemed acceptable. This means immigration agents can consider factors like location, occupation, and language spoken when determining reasonable suspicion for a stop.
